Hard day up in the mountains..

Had a tough day out in the mountains yesterday,weather was kind if nothing else & that's a bonus for sure! I'm sure age has a hell of a lot to do with how difficult I'm finding walking in & amongst the high tops these day's..I'm not going to lie it's becoming nigh on f###ing impossible for me to enjoy a days mooching about up there .. anyways,it turned out not too bad in the end,what I have realised & i have to admit I had a tear in my eye is that Boots is all but finished now,he has recently seen his 9th birthday & like a good friend of mine told me yesterday if a dog at 9 year's old is totally sound & possesses it's speed from its youth it's not been worked hard enough nor seen enough especially for daytime work & I think he's right in saying that..I don't ever want to embarrass or sicken the dog,he deserves to go out as a champ & that's what I'll do with him so his solo day's out hunting the mountains will be very few from here on if at all,I had his pups Bear & Rose with me yesterday too as I knew in my heart the old dog could do with a helping hand nowadays,Bear having suffered a broken neck will never be what I hoped & think he would of been so basically my one & only runner is the runt of the litter I kept back Rose,she's a handy little thing,far from flawless but she's the best we have so it's pretty much over to her now..Boots is currently here with me 36 hours after returning from his hunting trip still hardly able to stand up without help from me,his back is knackered,it's been getting gradually worse for 3 year's now,he's on tablets etc for it but still I know first hand having a bad back myself no number of tablets help when the pain is bad,he pretty much lives either in the Portamag or on the sofa so I guess he's as good as he could ever be..it's been a great journey with him,our chapter together is fast coming to an end but we still have one or two trips planned before we call it a day for good..time flies when your having fun as they say it's been one helluva fast ride..

Seems hes had a good life, that's the important bit and best bit about it! Hope he he'll settle with retirement easily and enjoys it. Atb

I bet if the both of you had to do it all again you wouldn’t change a thing. Looks like he has had a good life and done you proud. Wise words from your friend. I once carried my dog into the vets and someone commented on the extent of his injury and called me irresponsible. Vet turned to them and said “this dog does what he’s bred to do and has a great life doing it…..what’s irresponsible is having an overweight Labrador like yours that’s never walked off the lead .
