As far as I'm aware, that was the last stoning in Saudi, but I'm sure it's happened a lot more recently in places like Iran and Pakistan. I don't understand the logic though in lambasting the police. If he appeared to be a straight up guy to them then that's exactly what you'd expect them to say when asked on the matter. It's like if he was a plumber or an electrician, would tradesman be made to feel guilty because a nutter murdered someone.
