Talking to the Butcher today and he said there is no shortage of meat. Some pigs are killed with co2 but Britain's meat supplies don't rely on it. Think a lot of prepacked supermarket meat uses co2 in the packing process. Load of bullshite like most things....probably be used to reduce farms in the UK and import more meat from abroad.
