Is 6.5 creedmoor the best all-rounder?

Recommended Posts

I'm interested in rabbit fox deer, and target practice on a range 25-1000yrd. If you were to only own one rifle, is the 6.5 creedmoor the best all round compromise? or do you prefer .243?

I'll also have a 12gauge for pigeon, rabbit, and clay.

All this with lead free ammo in mind since we seem to be going that way.

Simple answer is no

foxes / small deer .243 covers both

rabbits .22lr 99% of people who have FAC have one and I would guess for the majority it was the first rifle they had on their ticket

cant answer about range’s because it really doesn’t interest me

You'll never get a rifle granted on good reason where your good reason is to save having to buy more than 1 rifle. It's specifically not a good reason. The only way to justify a rifle via good reason is to show a specific need for it that cannot be fullfilled by any other rifle you hold. As you hold a .243, thats probably going to be long range large deer beyond what might be humane ith a .243, and if you're claiming that, your land will also need to be large enough and open enough to support the claim.

If that's not your intention, then heed the advice above. 6.5 is overkill for anything less than deer and expensive compared to .22 cf or rf rounds. As for a good deer rifle. Many choices and some might say look at the 6.8 Western (new) if looking in the 6mm range. If not plenty in the 7mm, .270, 30 calibre range.

As soon as you write deer are the 243win out by barrel twist. Both the .243 and 6,5 are a bit much for rabbit ammo cost ~1£ each too. For monometal bullets and deer the .308 cant be beaten.

Except it can! by the 30/06.

Why the western over the Creedmore ? Honestly don't think the western is gonna be around too long. Seems like another .224Valkarie

I dont think 6,8 Western are going to be popular in Europe but with the US army NGSW program and the fast twist rate a new interest may come for the .270s. Finnish ammo manufacturers makes 10g/155gr bullets for the 270win and with a faster twist a 6,8mm bore could shoot monometal bullets in what weight range (for moose and bear).

.224 Valkyrie may be taken over by the new hot 6mm ARC for the ar15 platform.

I wouldn't know tbh. Any new calibre is a guessing game. The Western has the advantage of being based on the next generation military cartridge and traditionally these have endured much more than other cartridges because of the military association. Early indictaions are it's accurate and delivers considerally more energy and range. It also kicks though. Maybe not the most technical of YT channels, but very impressive groupings right out of the box @ 100yds sighting in:

If you want a round almost guaranteed to be around for a long time, then pick one the established ones.
