Jagd terriers and bigger game hunting

I’ve seen a lot of hog hunting videos and they all seem to favour either the jagd terrier, pitbull terrier or english bull terrier.

does the Jagd have any sort of advantage over say a patterdale or something of that type?

The English bull is the best of the three to cross for pigs. Pits are too game and try and fight the pigs instead of holding in a work like manner. Jagd terriers are great hunters but they trail bark and that's not good if you want to catch a few from the mob or in thick country.

is it hard to find good english bulls? i've heard that the nose on some of them can make it difficult for them to breathe.

Some jagd lines are bred for tracking and baying, other lines are bred for earth work, I'd still have a patt compared to most lines of jagd

There are a couple of hunters over here that have lines of big 40kg English bulls for pig catching. They don't have an exaggerated down face. Crossed with staghounds are popular.

The pig hunters I've heard that have had Jagd have not kept them long.

That’s good to know there are still working lines of english bulls, most of the ones you see now are fat lumps closer to a seal than a terrier

Patterdale just seems to be the “perfect” terrier and can do more or less anything, but I have seen a jagd terrier used as a personal protection dog which I’ve never seen from a patterdale

My father kept jags and I have kept pats.A good jagdterrier will work a track several miles.He will give tongue as Mr Aussie said.As far as digging  purposes the black ens are better.There are critters in the ground that are much more of a test for a terrier than a hog.Ive seen just as many good hog dogs from the shelter as I have from big name breeders.Not true of digging dogs.I live in Alabama with a thriving  hog population but I don't hog hunt my blacken's.Just my experiences.

what would you say is a bigger test in the ground?

I know I kid who’s had a few jags and say they are shit for digging work,his said the other day he’s dug down a few times for nothing there at all just false baying.

I knew a very good pig hunter that got all his dogs from the pound, any likely looking mutt. He saved a lot of dogs, gave them a purpose and caught heaps of pigs, I liked that bloke.

I do think the jagd is a good and useful hunter but not the best earth dog and not ideal for pigs in Oz.

I’ve done that before with a crossbred thing,I even told the lad not to buy the fecking thing he gave £400 for it and all it did was kill 3 rats cause havok in the motor with the other dogs so that ended up in the soil.
