A bit off subject but I'm in the market for a decent family tent, a 5 man or similar size. 

Been looking at the air tents and the canvas bell tents but I don't have a clue which would be better. 

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I bought a second hand vango Avington ( think that's how u spell it ) sleeps 5 but has a big living space and porch,  was only £80 too

The canvas bell tents can be used in winter with a wood stove, so another option, but you wouldn't want to carry one very far

Weight won't be an issue I'd of thought, it'll be used in camp sites and in places that's accessible by vehicle. I'm more drawn to the canvas tents for the reason you've mentioned but are they any better or more practical than a more modern type tent I just don't know.

The issue you have with a canvas tent is if you have to pack it away wet.
You will need enough room when you get home to fully erect it to dry it out otherwise it will stain and rot.

You could try a campsite where they have the canvas tents to rent out before deciding whether to buy one or not

I've read that about the canvas tents and although havng the room isn't an issue are they OK to be left erected for a few days in wet weather if you did get a bad spell.

They're alright mate, they need seasoning anyway with a few times getting wet then drying to expand the canvas, but if you left one up for weeks or months you'd have to treat for mold, if you're near trees you could put a ridge line up and use a good sized tarp for protection against rain
