See a pure whippet wouldn’t be any good for me a whippet based lurcher could be useful.. I need something that is quick off the mark and something that works well around cover.. in all size fields/terrain a dog that can take a knock or two.. I would put a good whippet dog to my bitch in a few seasons if she keeps it up ? Who knows.. it’s finding a good whippet these days would be a problem?? I like the beddy cross.. but think a first cross lacks that extra gear!

I agree too I’ve had first cross Beddy whippet in the past and they are great over 40/50 yards but anything past that they come lacking compared to other crosses. My current pup is a Beddy whippet but it’s bred from good few generations of Beddy whippet I’ve seen to got a bit lucky as she’s a good bit quicker than your standard first cross and seems to keep that pace up a lot longer too

? I know you are not too keen on the Blue Merles,..so I always fetch one along, just to annoy ya? The wee bitch that you might have seen run, one or two shushis, would be Angel.. I remember,

just for lamping I'd go for a pure whippet, for daytime bushing/ferreting i'd add a bit of beddy/grey but keep it 3/4 sighthound.  Beddy/whippet X grey, 23 inches, basically a bred down grew with

Would have to agree with you TOMO?  Facts are, IF...you can get a fast type to slow down, use his head, instead of his muscles, then the quarry is half way into the bag. You have proved it yourse

If we are talking lamping rabbit dog, then in my opinion almost all average sized lurchers, given the optimum opportunity will make sound rabbit dogs.

The best i've seen were not of a certain type or cross but were schooled and out enough to take it to another level.

Fare point Paul, it getting  plenty of rabbits in front of your dog, that make them good rabbit dog in the lamp. Only going from 2 dogs experience I've got now, and other lurchers I've messed about, I say on average most dogs with collie in them, seem to do well at the rabbit game. My old 1x collie xgrey Bryn, been my best daytime dog that mooching and ferreting he was brill at them   and good in the lamp, had plenty of 30s in a night. But being honest my big 1x gsd xgrey Buck been great in the lamp on rabbits, best bag 38, and had plenty of 20s a night, which I think no mean feat for a 28in 88lb dog, he wasn't bred for rabbits he bred for other quarry,  but pick a rabbit quite easy, he  strike brill.

Always loved Beddy Grey seem to be a better alrounder than the smaller Beddy whippet

I like both xs but bedy grey bigger stronger and do a lot more without getting punished, but saying that I see some great bedy whippets

Don’t get me wrong I have seen first cross put plenty in the bag.. and not run out of steam!.. I think they just lack that extra bit of pace when it’s needed if there on the quarry it’s game over

That’s it! I think second and third gen first crosses can produce that bit extra pace but it all depends. Would like to see a pacey beddy whippet put to a strong leggy Beddy grey id say they produce tidy rabbiting dogs for both day and night

That’s a cross you don’t see a lot of would be interesting.. and one id consider my self, I’ve ran alsorts of crosses from saluki x bull types to deerhound and collie types even whippets Wheaton and beddy crosses one that stood out for me had to be the deerhound collie grey.. he had everything you look for in a dog still lamping at 11 year old.. injury free good feet coat brains and a very high drive

I recon this young bitch of mine would have made a decent rabbit dog if i'd of had her 20+ years ago. Though she seems to have all the qualities, i's gonna be tough to ensure i put enough infront of her to really know. Spinning 6/7 rabbits local just doesn't show the cracks.

It really don't matter whats in her either imo, she's a nice size, a good lift from the off and the determination i like in a youngster. It really is just a case of numbers...

Hi Liam, good to see that you are still into your hunting?

Please give my kindest regards to your Father?

The little bitch in the photo was a real nice animal,...mostly Whippet/Collie and a bit of Greyhound...

If you get a chance, borrow my 2006 book, A Moucher's Tale, (its no great shakes? ) I am not a writer,..but, there is a description of Gypsy, the Blue bitch and unfortunately, the story of her sad demise...?

Go careful now Brother, and stay safe,..all the best, OldPhil.?
