Popular Post comanche 2,799
"Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me?" That line ,credited to a rather notorious Actress of the Classic Hollywood era , can still raise a smile today . Though the firearm aspect of the quote has generally been replaced by a less subtle reference to a banana . Yesterday l set forth into the woods with not a gun ,or a banana , but a fishing rod in my pocket . A little forest ghyll that is for the most only a few inches deep and a couple of feet wide had been dammed many years ago to provide a local water supply . I had no idea if it even held any fish but l reckoned if it did this dammed section and the weir below would be the likeliest spots. A few stubs of pipe and rusty iron are the only evidence of a pump but the dam is still holding . The water for thirty or so yards above it looks deep and mysterious . It also looked a bit daunting to someone armed with just a three foot telescopic rod and a dozen worms .. so l opted to freeline a worm in the little pool below the sluice . Even swollen by recent rain it turned out to be not much more than a foot deep but l had a bite first cast! . I was taken completely by surprise by what in the murky water appeared to be a chub of about ten inches but as l grounded it in the shallows l realised it was a trout ! I didn't even need to unhook it ; with a flick it did that itself and splashed back onto the stream. So there is no picture of what turned out to be the biggest fish of the evening but my enthusiasm was fired. Successive casts brought a collection of sticks and leaves to the bank but also a few perch and little trout. One tentative bite resulted in the tiniest eel l've ever seen. A perfect miniature specimen that sadly just wouldn't keep still for the camera . Out of daylight and worms l clambered up the bank and set off on a peaceful two mile walk through the dark woods to civilisation . Nothing huge had been caught but l declared the excercise something of a success . Not only that , but l had avoided an embarrassing encounter with the ghost of Mae West!
