There is a saying in New Zealand , you can only kill em once ,and this has paned out as perdicted ,my totally tally was 20 rabbits on the trip before this latest visit ,this trip only netted 8 .A huge far cry from the 350 I was killing 3 years ago .

That looks like great hunting. I've been to nz a couple of times and expect to go back sometime. It always struck me that the small game hunting is overlooked because of the pigs. If I was there I think I'd specialise in running the hares with a lurcher and hunting the possums with a bobbery pack like yours. The pig hunting is great fun but hard on the dogs and the back

Yes that sport is why both my knees require part replacement now ,but why save the  body ,life is just the one ride, ,no return tickets given, so we should all go hard ,for as long as possible. While my dogs are allowed to target both rabbits and hares  ,possums are off my list when dogging work. We have other better methods that deliver better results to both control & recover the possums for their valuable fur and meat for dog tucker. ,however the main reason I don't allow my dogs to hunt them is, the pack would go mad over them ,passing up all other game to hunt and kill a coon which what the possum is known by here. They make their daytime nests in any suitable dry place ,and come out to feed during the hours of darkness. Several animals can share a run or pathway they make traveling to areas where they target food at different times of the year .They dine on anything from fruits ,shoots ,flowers ,seed heads & leaves depending on the time of year. Leg hold traps can be placed either on these runs or at the  base of feed trees to catch coons when they visit ,attracted by lure rubbed up the trunk of theses trees, which is  made up of a strong scent & flour.

While we have a flea its not the brown rabbit flea you guys have,and again no we don't have ticks so our small game animals are clean.The common flea can be found on dogs and in warm weather their numbers can build quickly if treatment isn't applied.

"Jetts" sire was a Greyhound & his  Dam was a German Wire haired Pointer/Beardy collie. He has the Jacket of the WHP.

Jett always seems to get himself in the right spot for any escaping rabbits ,he seems to know the right spot .Without doubt I more than most ,know that good dogs breed  good dogs .With each breeding I like to see a improvement ,at times you don't get one but it shows up  on the next cross, part of my cull program is I will not breed with a substandard dog or bitch .I used Jett who is rising 6 now over a good bitch & the pup I kept is showing signs of being what we term a "goer" the rest is up to me .I wont require the pup called "snow" to do anything huge or mind blowing until he's fully broken in & at a age he can handle 5 days of work per week. I've seen a number of dogs buggered up because the owner thought he had a dog of a life time at a year old . I've thought when I've had a great dog ,one of a life time that Id never have another like it ,yet over the years I've had a good number of really good dogs ,one seems to pop up when its needed .The one thing I know, after many years of hunting all manner of breeds, is that good dogs require plenty of work before it becomes good at its trade, breeding is only half the story  without work no dog can reach its true Pinnacle.
