Normandy Landings.

Recommended Posts

My god father drove a landing craft and ran into the beaches numerous times.

He shot a yank officer that wouldn't get off the boat and get moving while his men where being machine gunned on the boat.

Today marks the 77th anniversary of D-Day.

The average age of those landing on the beaches was 20 years old, babies that became men.

It was a honour chatting to a veteran who was there, he'll be 101 now.

A time when boys became men , and a time proud to be English

deepest respects to those who fought and gave there lives for the price of freedom ,

But ..

On Sicily a while back I had the honour of doing a battlefield study.

one of my best mates at work has a very similar surname to mine . Our names are quite unusual and you never really encounter them day to day .

but on the beach landing memorial of the 82nd airborne at Gira , there in the list half way down , mine first and directly underneath was his .

we both smiled at each other and grinned . In his thick jarrow accent he said to me “I hope they were friends ya Knaw “

it was genuinely one of the best moments of my life

I’ve visited many of the grave yards in France, it’s a truly humbling experience

I did the 'battlefied tour' with my old man, a few years ago.  Incredible.  ?
