Back on the subject of Jill jabs. I have mine done every year and we take my mates in at the same time to keep the cost down. We have 3 ferrets each but one of his never came into season this year, so my mate said I'll ask the vet while we are there. I replied don't do that they will charge us consultation he agreed. So what does he do? After the ferrets are brought back (had to wait outside because of Covid) and we are chatting to the Vet about the Ferret she has just done my mate asks about the one that never came in season. Result another £18.26 on the bill for small animal consolation, would have been £37.61 for 5 ferrets jabbed instead of £56.19.

So if you do take then in don't ask a question I've had it before when you get chatting to the Vet and you ask a question.

I've done both mate but I my opinion by the time they come out of season if left they are a bit out of salts when you need them to start a new season hunting. I changed Vets about three years ago and I always ask for the same Lady Vet and she is a small animal specialist and very good, so you have to speak as you find.

A Ferret left in season is more susceptible too infections.

Copied:

An unmated jill is sometimes described as having hyperoestrogenism. The symptoms are:

  • Constant oestrus behaviour – typically a swollen vulva and reduced appetite
  • Anaemia – insufficient red blood cells. The symptoms are:
    • Pale gums
    • Reduced ability to exercise or work
    • Shortness of breath
    • Lethargy
  • Panleukopenia – insufficient white blood cells, causing increased susceptibility to infection.
  • Thrombocytopenia – insufficient platelets (the cells that allow the blood to clot). This may result in:
    • Blood in the droppings
    • Bruising under the skin (visible as a rash)
    • Internal bleeding
  • Baldness, as oestrogen at high levels stops the hair from growing.

I've always kept jills mate and I have three if I mated them I could end up with a load of ferrets I don't want so it's the Jab.

I have heard of using a cotton bud but sexually interfering with my ferrets don't think I'll go there. Not sure if it's a old wives tale to be honest..

I'm not calling you a liar mate I'm no spring chicken as well in fact I'm 70 in a few weeks and had ferrets since I was twelve and my father had them before I had my own. My grand father was a small holder and trapper.

That list is what can happen doesn't mean it will. When they are in season they stop producing white blood cells and there for more prone to infections. It's not me saying it, its people far more educated that me.

Now you go your way and I'll go mine. I will do what ever I think is right for my Ferrets and thats it. Atb.

Ow do,In regards to keeping em today they've got more food for ferrets than humans compared to years ago they would be fed bread n milk pobs n scraps of rabbits or the odd bird you got with yer 177pellet gun Compared to back then today they've won the lottery . But today it's tougher to hunting just crazy         n no locator they were to expensive it was a pantomime getting yer ferret n rabbit if they were stuck but it was great fun .   .A.T.B

It wasn't that they were too expensive they didn't exist. Used to be crawling around on hands and knees put your hat on the ground then put your ear to the ground listening for a bump. Or lining another ferret surprising used to get sort of a sixth sense for if. A good dog with a nose was so handy in them circumstances. Think the finders are a god send even if you know that the ferret is still in the same burrow and not sneaked off down the hedge.

Ello there, I'm going to be honest with you all wether you want to believe me or not that's up to you I've been keeping ferrets all my life n I'm no spring chicken These bloody vets don't no jack shit about ferrets Iv lists jobs because ov getting them the snip after couple ov yes there bellies fill up with fluid n die I've had Jill's snipped n the same thing n Iv as vets tell me to molest it's fanny with a plastic pick I've learned over the years not to bother n before I finish all these clowns that write books don't no jack crap I've had ferrets die with all sorts n they write it's because of feeding this n feeding that  They will charge you hundred pound it's there fault n say something else . Don't bother save your money and pride Not one word of this is a lie .

I was talking to vet yesterday about having hobs snipped and he said he advices clients not to bother as it might make them sick in long run ,he said only safe way is to get them a inplant but this is costly especially if you have several hobs and jill jabs is safest way to go with jills and never herd of one being lost because of jab .once a ferret going down hill it can be over very quickly so his advice was to find a vet who helps local ferret rescue as these vets will have more knowledge than most on ferrets and to get the ferret to them as soon as you see something not right .

I can never understand how people thought bread and milk was a good diet for a carnivore but was common to feed it. Maybe the rabbits caught had to go to feed the family first.
