Had a tradesman call round to one of my places, one time, Dido. Place away from my home town,

Came through the front door. Did what ever he'd came to do.

On the way out, he spotted the Firemans axe resting behind the front door. He looked at me as if I'd suddenly sprouted two more heads!

" Firemans axe, by your door? 'Nice!' " He said.

Never forgot that. Thought to myself, at the time;

" What a charmed life you must have had. Brought up in a place, so nice, you can open your front door to any knock, without feeling it may lead to you fighting for your fukking life. "

moved out of glasgow twenty year ago to a nice wee village in perthshire never got out the habbit of a tool at the back of the door and side of the bed....had some funny looks at a billhook behind the porch door

be a 70/80s job handles are the give away

What they fetching over there at the moment ?

Used to sell a lot of it early 90s, made decent money too as it was expensive to buy new.

I just spent the night in Sligo and I went in a grand old shop yesterday with an amazing shop front.

Anyway, by chance I got talking to the loveliest, most interesting bloke who happened to be the owner.....he was ancient and a lovely, softly spoken gentleman.
Looking sharp as a pin in his suit.

I said how much I liked the shop front and he told me his father and uncle had saved for 10 years to have it built in 1919.

All the gold leaf and mosaic tile step was laid down in London and shipped over, and he still had the original drawings with hand written alterations.

Doors were all Burmese teak and looked as good as the day they went in over a hundred years ago.

Brass work was the same.

I love chance encounters like that and I love the fact that things still exist from a time when we valued quality and craftsmanship.
