Ah yeah, the EU have us exactly where they want us! Five years ago they had a meeting and decided that they were going to get us to unilaterally leave the club and then not dance to their tune while negotiating our new relationship.

What as that got to do with anything, the EU are bigger and stronger than us politically and economically, we are on their doorstep, that's a fact of life.

Plus of course they are better than us at negotiating, just look at the Brexit fiasco, things like fishing and more importantly not protecting the financial sector, which is our biggest earner. We have only just reached a sort of deal but that has massive grey areas that leads companies to look elsewhere for a more certain future.

We are a massive economy in our own right but one that is in decline and without massive investment we will continue to decline in real terms against the EU and emerging powers like India. The government is spending 29 million on new vaccine development but 200 million on a boat, it should be the other way round, the soft technologies such as medicines development etc are the way forward but we are spending less not more on science and research.

I think its only a matter of time until hardball needs to come into play re Europe. They seem to still be under the illusion that they can dictate to the UK.

But they have a lower death rate from Covid than us! If they have a debacle we have a worse one! We are one of the richest and live on an island.................. and you think they got it wrong?

You said we'd fall in line as we were dictated to because we had no option to do otherwise. It was demonstrably nonsense. Since May's departure the history of UK/EU relations has been one of not doing what the EU wants us to. Pretending that we are still under their thumb seems like remainer denial.

Totally agree they are politically and economically generally our superior..... Superiority does not equal dominance or supremacy.

There's no actual Brexit deal that would have resulted in your approval so I just take that as granted. A perfect deal was never going to happen given the positions of each side.

There's always areas of industrial neglect and decline, you can be relied on to point them out with a Tory government. Shall we talk about the areas that are being developed and flourishing?

Comparing government spending like that is naive. They're buying the boat vs stimulating private R&D/business. An economic/industrial strategy which I'll remind you led to the success of the vaccine development already.

Now that’s a decent post and one I agree with on many levels.

We are less, we have been systematically undermined by successive governments and their supporters over the years.

However, if you want things to be better (and I agree they need to be a lot better) then the first step is to stop undermining the nations from within.

I don’t believe in this version of Britain and what I get from you is that you don’t believe in it at all......whatever happens, you are always talking the job down and in that respect we are the same.

However, I come at it from an angle of wanting to see Britain restored whereas I believe you think continuing to sell out to every man and his dog is the way forward.

You have said yourself you would happily overlook Britain people to give special privilege to aliens for certain jobs.......it seem you extend that cuckold outlook to everything exterior to Britain.

No it's not naive to compare spending, it demonstrates priorities and there is a drop in funding which will mean less input. When there is funding we can do well .i.e the Oxford vaccine but there needs to be the investment to drive out futures.

The vaccines funding " The Oxford vaccine came from "The overwhelming majority of the money, especially in the early stages of the research, came from UK government departments, British and American scientific institutes, the European commission and charities including the Wellcome Trust. Less than 2% of the identified funding came from private industry, the researchers said, a finding they said posed a challenge to the views of people such as Boris Johnson, who has said that the record-fast development of Covid-19 vaccines was “because of capitalism, because of greed”.

Analysis rebuts claim by Boris Johnson that jab was developed ‘because of greed’

Then we have the rest "The EU financially supported the development of the BioNTech and Pfizer vaccine and has obtained a lower price per dose ($14.70 than the US ($19.50). The Moderna vaccine’s development was subsidised by the US government, and it will cost the US about $15 a dose, while the EU is paying $18.

The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine is much cheaper, although neither the UK nor the US can match the EU’s $2.15 deal: they are expecting to pay about $3 and $4, respectively, per dose.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine, expected to announce phase III results imminently, is also much cheaper, costing the EU $8.50, with each dose going twice as far as the other brands, since it is a single shot vaccine."

A string of revelations about vaccine prices has focused attention on a practice considered normal in the drug industry but often frowned on elsewhere: charging...

A country, like a business, doesent grow without investment and we are just not investing in this country and its our children that will suffer.

If funding things like research, our infrastructure, education, health etc is a socialist ideal then I'm glad i'm a socialist.

So let me get this straight. The UK produces a vaccine at like $4 a shot in the same time frame that everyone else did who are paying factors more for their home grown vaccines per shot but the UK is shit because the bigger economies naturally got better deals on our vaccine. LOL

Of course funding in an emergency is dominated by government funding.... It's not an emergency anymore and private industry is now up and running with it. Well, until the world bins IP rights.

People invest in things that have a future, they invest in places that want to believe in themselves.

Or.......

They stick money into places that want to whore themselves to the highest bidder then take their profits and check out.

You political philosophy has created fertile ground for the latter of the above situations.

You wanted a nation where nobody gives a shit about each other or the soil beneath their feet, a base instinct place where corrupt politicians f**k the people over daily to feather their own nest.......in short you wanted Africa and you got it, look in the mirror and take your share of the blame like any of us who voted main party or didn’t speak up louder have to do.

If we want to talk about power projection then it's noteworthy that last year the UK climbed the GDP world ranking ladder back to fifth place, we have returned to the premier league of military power projection and we retain our 3rd place soft power ranking.

Countries f****d clearly, oh to be a cog in the mighty empire...

Because everything happens by stealth, we have had European cars forced on us in a stealth manner since the Blair sell out, even Vauxhall’s a re badged Renault,  but now we are being directed in a different direction towards Kia,s and Hyundai’s etc, look at the increase in dealerships and tv advertising, for these brands which were the butt of jokes 10 years back, police cars and ambulances will be Korean next and the population will just fall in line without even realising they are being steered that way ??

40 years on from the Falklands crisis: what realistically would the response be if it happened today......?

With the now lifted corona virus restrictions against the Falklands as opposed to within UK, Falklands seems to not be counted as a part of (Great) Britain.
