Wadcutters

Recommended Posts

When shot paper as a kid, indoors, I used these flat head pellets, I forget the brand if I'm honest, but my groups were miniscule. Indoors obviously makes a huge difference.

I bought some the other day and wasnt that surprised when they shot like cr-p over 30m out doors with 11.5ftlb hunters or 10.8ftlb comp Rifles.

But why.... Does anyone know why they fair so badly against a diabolo out doors over such a slight increase in distance?

Don't domed pellets have a better ballistic coefficiency than wadcutters and hollowpoints etc, especially at longer distance?

I remember my son 'advising' me about grain weights, skirt diameter, muzzle velocity, ballistic coefficiency etc etc, ...... ????, a few years back when I was getting back into airgunning.

I  tried to take on board what he was telling me, but found myself getting confused by it all.  Had a break, then cracked on how I used to do things years ago, when we didn't have the 'knowledge' that is available today.

Still not a great shot, but I now know if I miss, I know why, and it's my fault, and I'm ok with that. ?

True Shaaark. In my case, with the springer it was me versus the gun, but with the pcp it's me versus myself.

That's why I love springers two things to master, the gun and your own skills..

Trouble is that all the guns are slightly different and I've amassed a good few... The cabinet is now completely full shall we say.

I now know which ones genuinely shoot well and which have needed a lot of work, which are hidden gems and which are expensive white elephants. I don't want to share these views particularly as they can be so subjective but I have a new lowish cost hunting rig I want to show ya.

They are designed for punching very neat holes ( so that accurate scores can be recorded) in paper targets ..  They are spot- on for standard 5 and 10 yd  indoor competition ranges where  accuracy is more important than power . Further than that they are not so aerodynamic. Though they are sometimes recommended for short range pigeon control in buildings. Possibly due to some imagined or real shock value and the fact they won't go through the victim or damage the building if you miss?
