Top Five Books?

Recommended Posts

In no particular order:

Saigon. Anthony Grey. From the moment the swaggering French officer vaporises at Dien Bien Phu, we Know this is gonna be a good'n!

Shōgun. James Clavell. Another, life altering, epic. Complete immersion in the culture and language of the Samurai era.

Rats And How To Destroy Them. Mark Hovell. The Ratcatchers bible. So much adaptable today that they never teach via classroom exams.

Nathan - A Pit Fighting Dog. Brian Plummer. I like historical drama. And I've always loved Plummers characterisations too. Just add Pit Bulls!

All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten. Robert Fulghum. Slipped to me, as parting gift, by a Kiwi lad who was single handedly 'seeing the world' and fell into and with my old local. Probably the most touching gift ever.

I've not read fiction since I was at school, loved The Call of the Wild, White Fang, Jurrasic Park.

I like reading history books, The Rise & Fall of the Third Reich is brilliant as is Europe at War, a proper neutral perspective that shows our own contributions was exaggerated on our part.

Joseph Hellers "Catch 22" . I've read it so many times I could almost quote it verbatim.

Sun Tzui's "The Art Of War".

Tolstoy's  "War and Peace". I was told there was a chapter on Bozois coursing wolves so started reading it and couldn't put it down !

Crumps " A Good Keen Man" , New Zealand's far better alternative to Plummer !

Darcy's "Now That's What I Call Lurcher Work 2", just because it mentions a couple of my dogs ! ? !

Cheers.

Thing is, I've got a twatting bookshelf in the living room but our lass has filled most of it with photos, vases, bottles of spirits and the kids' toys at the bottom.

I've got 3 spaces with all my best books in, mostly hunting and APBT books. ?

Not particularly academic, interesting or impressive but if I'm being honest:

Animal Farm, George Orwell. Read at a time when I was starting to suss people out for myself and it confirmed what I was thinking.

Pygmallion, George Bernard Shaw. Similar to above.

Hunt and Working Terriers, Captain Jocelyn M Lucas MC. Made me aware of a world that I had no idea existed and have been trying to live in that world ever since, without success. Unfortunately I was not born into the British officer class and the 1st quarter of the 20th century had long  gone.

Electrical Installations, C Sheldon. An important book for me when I started labouring on building sites and was being treat like shit by tradesmen. If you can't beat them ...join them. And then become their boss.

The Bible, unknown. I am not religious but was brought up in a Christian family and some of the stuff in there has stood me in good stead. All men are born equal, treat others as you would have them treat you... that sort of stuff.

Can’t possibly choose a top five but these five are constants in my ever evolving book shelf .

I find it hard to leave “Friday night lights “ off any list of books as it’s the greatest sporting book ever . By quite a stretch .

I’ll also take off anything by motley crue or guns and roses biographical as I could do a top five easily , notable shout for Steven alders biography . Great read .

and I’ll remove all historical military non fiction types by both Anthony beevor and Stephen ambrose as you cold fill a top ten by those authors alone.

So current all time recommended top 5 would be ......

“bury my heart at wounded knee” by Dee brown

few books affected me like this . A must read for anyone .

Right this may seem a strange choice but if you’ve read it , you’ll know how good it actually is . It’s very dark , told from the soul and despair of a life spent in pain, addled by addictions to sex , pain killers and 11 Months a year away from your family . This isn’t the book they wanted but it’s the book they got and what a read it is . I’ve mentioned it before to people in conversation and listeners in have interjected and said “ I can’t believe you’ve read that as well” it’s a f***ing great book ! Honestly .
