Alright Chaps and Chapettes,

just wondering pre-ban, did anyone ever have a dog that only ever did deer? I’m taking never caught anything but deer?

this is well before the ban but I had a beddy/deer/collie Lurcher that never caught anything but deer, not a single rabbit, hare or fox I’m his whole life but slaughtered roe/fallow and muntjac like no other dog. Straight in for the neck, job done. A lot of the time he’d do this weird bark/howl to let me know where he was.

now Iv had 5 other lurchers, and all have done the business on most stuff but they have always worked there way up to deer, through the hierarchy of game. But until his dying day this hound never caught anything but deer.

just wondered if anyone else had experience of this? Never heard of another dog that did that.

It wasn’t like he wasn’t suited to other game, 27inchs  60lbs and really fast and agile, turned on a sixpence for his height and bags of stamina.
he would watch rabbit but ignore them. Deer.......dead in seconds.

god I miss that dog. Too dodgy for me now with the ban and amount of people out especially during lock down.

Does he hold his own once piled in like

Mainly round where I am it’s fallow and try as he might a full grown fallow is to much, he has managed the odd one that’s tripped or pushed it into a ditch but generally they kick him off. Keeps coming back for more though convinced one day he will get badly hurt. Can’t remember the last roe I saw round me but pretty sure a roe would be taken fairly easily but who knows! I would really rather he just gave up on deer full stop, kept thinking a good kicking will put him off but seems to just make him angry.

Surprisingly he hasn’t really come across one, I don’t do a huge amount of lamping and day time they have successfully kept to themselves! Had some unfortunate incidents with other dogs since he got attacked completely unprovoked and now have issues with other male dogs he doesn’t know. Sort of issues where he piles in and throat holds them...Mrs no longer walks him off the lead. It’s a real problem, was good as gold but since he got attacked seems to have the attitude of pile in before they go at me. Dog that attacked him was twice his size and it ended up on its arse with the owner screaming hysterically blaming him ??‍♂️, her dog most definitely threw the first punch so to speak but because hers was on its arse it was obviously my dogs fault ?. Lockdown has been a nightmare out working, happily ferreting off footpath and some c**t with an out of control dog comes bowling over. Once he knows a dog good as gold though
