I didn't know there were any here. I understand the concept of adding bull but once it's watered down to less than 1/4 or maybe 1/8 the attributes you are trying to put in wouldn't be noticeable. The only benefit maybe adding some new blood if you breed into a corner with your line. I wouldn't bother adding any other blood in any breed if it doesn't stay around 1/4, I can't see much point. Not an expert on genetics so correct me if I'm wrong.

I didn't read many of the modern day terrier books.I was more interested in the older terrier books such as Lucas book,diary of an otter hunter,Otters and otter hunting. Several years ago I received a phone call that an elderly British author and terrier man was visiting 4 hour drive from my house.This man was telling glorious tales of the otterchase.Me being the Confederate gentleman I am I jumped in my pickup truck and drove 4 hours to shake this man's hand and invite him on a trip in my boat.Upon meeting this man he informed me that otter was too much for a terrier and basically proceeded to call me a fool for attempting such things.I politely agreed as I was taught to respect my elders.I went and got in my pickup and drove 4 hours back home.

You can pick your heroes,You can also pick your nose, But it's harder to wipe your heroes on your britches leg.

I like the look of plummers, especially the early smaller type but i can't help thinking to myself why re-invent the wheel when Russells have filled the role?

I think the jack Russell club ( or whatever it was called)- de- registered his dogs. So he went and called them after himself.

Just wondering how you arrived at that statement Steve ,no trick question .

I just quoted what has been/was said as to why the bull was ever added to the plummer terriers make up,no trick answer Timmy..

It's general knowledge in the plummer world as such on the make up of the plummer terrier  like i said it makes no odds to me and i have no opinion about it being added,what i will say is if a terrier needs bone adding to it as such then get a big boned dog of the same type and go down that route..

Come on sid g, you can't leave it there. Well you can of course, your prerogative.

It's not a working terrier book so no exaggerated tales of super dogs that in reality may have been useless in there. Unless it in regard to the abilities of the terriers owned by John Russell himself but I doubt your that old?

The authors unashamedly justify the recognition of pure or crossbred Lakelands so would not have thought that it is in regard to "purity" of breeding.

I am intrigued as to what the interesting story is, genuinely... don't leave us hanging man!

Spot on, they (Plummers) are simply the 'creation' of an egotistical maniac to have his name 'live on' in a new type of terrier.

And it was far EASIER to sell this type as specialising at rats, than it would be to breed a new type of earth dog.
