624 excellent reel I even bought a plastic spool for casting. But they were the best reel over a wreck they had the right speed for the old Red Gill. Lloyd Saunders who was the skipper of the Saltwind swore by them. We also used to use that reel for Congering from shore.

Cheers Arry

I've got an old 624 that I intended to use for catfish but I can't get used to the right hand wind.

A few of my old Mitchells........

A Mitchell half-bail from the early1950's. Hardy held the Patent for full bails until around 1952 so all fixed spools before that were half-bails like the Ambidex. The other Mitchell is from 1955/6 and has the level wind. I got the half-bail for £7 from an auction and the other Mitchell reel was €8 from the local charity shop.

I've had an Adcoccks Stanton for years. Lovely reel, but a pain if you aren't used to centrepins as it has no ratchet or means of braking the drum.

I got a couple of multipliers for lure and deadbait fishing. The Shimano Bantam was the first reel marketed by Shimano and is basically a copy of a Lews BB-1 that they made for the American company. The other reel is a Hardy Elarex that was made for salmon spinning in the 1940/50's and looks good on an old cane rod.

I recently bought an old ABU Cardinal 44 Express, but haven't had chance to use it because of the lockdown. I had to put a 33g lump of lead inside the rotor to stop it wobbling at full speed retrieve. It is a 6:1 ratio.

Brought back some memories,.my first rod was an American spinning rod from a family friend in states, my dad chopped it rotated the reel seat to the bottom and put some cork on it, I think it was a zebco closed face reel. After marching miles of river banks and doing 4am starts, best ever Christmas present was a small green rod bag and box , with a hook wallet I've still got today. I then got kitted out with John Wilson Avon rod and a Mitchell reel and the tench fishing was our staple. My father always had Abu reels for his float fishing. As an independent lad I'd fish the canal alone or with mates, amount of gear was immense , night fishing the canal at fifteen good craic, I've dabbled since but never had the passion for it again, looking back it was as much about spending a bit of time with my Oldman...

Nice Post mate...

Some more Mitchell's, A couple of Match reels (440a), One I bought new , T'uther from the bootsale a few years ago with next to no paint on but working perfect;ly!, Think it was a quid!

An old Milbro Magapult at the right side, Don't think i've ever seen anyone use one of these whilst fishing!!

cUXu1l2.jpg

Old Continental type seat box from the bootsale too, Think I paid four or five quid for it!, The Octoplus legs/feet were already fitted..

Back in the 1980's I bought a Daiwa 13' Whisker kevlar float rod, It was expensive, I paid weekly for it then brought it home when the last payment was made, It was a fabulous rod to use, A couple of years ago I was in the shed and lost my balance, I landed on my rod bag with a loud 'CRACK'!, I knew instantly that with my luck, It was my favourite rod, It was, I'd snapped the centre piece completely in two ? I found another on on fleabay  and although it had the same name/ number, It had a different handle, Rubber rather than cork!!

I've not been fishing in years but plan to start again now that i've finished working early, I'll be using mostly old tackle too!

Great pics and info mate...

I like those little multiplier bait casters... use a newer type with a light spinning rod on the kayak, like drifting for flatties with em...really light and good fun if you pick up a plaice or 2

Great stuff John, some nice old bits there mate...

I still use a couple of oldish float rods, one a gift many years ago the original Normark Tritan 13ft, this is an unmarked proto type...and my other older fave is a M.A.P Dave Harrell...

Have treated myself to the new Drennan Actolyte a few years back, lovely bit of kit...but still pick those old rods up regular enough..

I agree. It is therapeutic casting with a small multiplier. I have two more modern ones that I use for really light fishing. But an old cane rod and vintage salmon casting reel like a Hardy Silex is such a delight to cast with using a large spoon or plug.
