Trouble on the first night...

Recommended Posts

Having recently acquired a pup of 10 months old a little saluki collie hound 22tts and gained her trust and got her recall spot over the last number of weeks I decided to try her lamping. The first night couldn't have been better condition wise, high wind heavy cloud cover and no moon. Having tried implement some of David Sleights techniques into her training and being unsuccessful I said what the hell and took her out on her own. Kicked two squatters (bare in mind she has never seen a rabbit) out of the grass for her but she just seemed to be unaware of the rabbit and was completely oblivious to what I wanted her to do.

Yesterday a friend offered me to go out with his bitch to try bring her on and make something click maybe so I said I'd give it a go. I let her watch his bitch kill the first three rabbits and she keen to join in and was watching the rabbit on lamp. 4th rabbit I let her go with his bitch and she flew down to the rabbit with the dog but lost it on the turn out of pure chance his bitch turned the rabbit right into her nose and she grabbed it held for a bit dropped it and grabbed again she got a good squeal and seemed keen I was chuffed and thought one more like that and I will give her a run on her own. Up gets a rabbit in the middle of the field and on my friends bitch goes and I slip mine they turn the rabbit 4/5 times and I can see my bitch is  in and out of the race and then disaster she turns just before the other bitch and bang gets blind sided by her she lets a couple of yelps out of her and initially I think there is big trouble but she gets up and hobbles back to me with a cough or two out of her she shakes herself and gets going again. Im guessing she just got winded. I give her a half hour and she's back to herself but not as keen. The light goes on and one squats so I walk right up to her with my bitch and kick it out of the grass she sees it jogs after it and returns to me. He slips his bitch and she picks it and a big squeal goes out but my bitch has lost all interest in the game and we call it a night.

Whats your lads opinions on it? have you seen this before? Have I ruined her as she associates lamping with that slap she got now or was she just shook having been hit? Bear in mind I know you shouldn't run two dogs on the lamp together but  I was out of options with her she's the first pup I've had not really take to it and struggle to get going. She seems fine today

well, you said it all in the the last sentence , ( running 2 dogs on one rabbit ) your lucky it not a more serious injury . ok let your dog see another run, but leave it at that. i took my big dog out when a pup , out with my old dog few times, but never let him run the same rabbit, i kept him on the lead, and when he brought the rabbit back , let he have  feel of the rabbit, when my older dog give me the rabbit, just let him know what it was , and let him know it no big deal. if it was my dog now go solo all the while now, it knows what they are , keep it simple , no big long slips, walk the dog up close right on top of the rabbit then slip it, get it to catch , then leave it at that just  couple  runs no more , like been said no rush it only a rabbit  plenty of time with a pup.

maybe give her a rest mate week or so she might associate the knock she got with lamping and it may have soured her a bit give her a rest and try her again herself you have plenty of time she may look ready to go physically but might not be mentally she is still a pup really maybe try some ferreting with her on an open hill where she can see whats going on put nets over the holes but dont push the pegs in to the ground fully just enough to let the net purse around the rabbit and let her mouth them i did that with a first x collie grey pup i had back in the day she was a very shy pup that came good in the end all dogs are different and some mature quicker than others its all about confidence building make the pup feel as if shes won hope this helps?

This is why I think lads start dogs too soon and expect too much of them, dogs need time to mature mentally and physically, take a knock while playing. maybe taking out in the dark to something new to her and having a new owner and the fact she is only 10 months old and running her doubled up on a rabbit when she doesn't know how to run propley herself yet, maybe u have given her too much, especially having saluki in her I wouldn't be taking her lamping again this season, just let her be a pup and if u really have to take her out working take her ferreting and let her mouth a few rabbits in the net

Appreciate the replies lads, was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this as I have never had it and how the pup reacted. She got a shot of meloxicam this morning and a good look over no bruising or visible signs of injuries she tore around the yard when I took her out of her kennel so seems in good form. I will leave her till after Christmas and try get her a day ferreting see how she reacts.

Firstly well done for watching Dave Sleights dvd,s to me they are a good bench mark for any one starting out with a running dog or at times going back to view and redigest so to speak agree with riohog,bird,jpt,andwhitefeet4190.,what i would also suggest is get her to a canine chiroptacter(bone muscle person) to check her over also find a vet up on running dogs.atb my hounds just to add  Loxicom  could be masking a slight injury hence still get her checked out

Get a rabbit off your mate.and do some retrieveing with the pup in the back garden with it.hold the collar and throw the rabbit 5ft away talk to the pup "where is it" or something similar in an excited voice.then let the pup go work on the pup retrieving it to you.and highly parise the dog make a big fuss.repeat and throw the rabbit a few foot more every time.

Don't over do it though.maybe 3 or 4 time's.hang the rabbit up out of reach of the dog and he will look at it for 10 mins while you have a cuppa.talk in an excited voice again get the pup excited.and repeat the retrieveing with it..the dog will soon be happy with fur in its mouth..

Make it a fun and exciting for the dog.imagine how happy he will be seeing 1 run then a week later..but the most important thing is patience...no rush just steady away..

And Good luck..

Years back I had a little collie gh whippet bitch. She was exactly the same as yours not quite understanding what you expected of her . This is what worked for me. I got a small soft squeaky toy and got her playing in the house with it. When she was totally smitten with it I then took her over the local football field. There was always a bit of light from the houses so I would throw her toy and get her to retrieve it and really make a fuss of her. Gradually take her to somewhere totally dark and leave the lamp on and throw her toy so she can see it. Again let her retrieve . Then throw it with the lamp off and light it up. If she shows no interest walk to it constantly reassuring her “ good girl where is it” till she pulls on her lead . It won’t take long mate and she ll figure it out. Eventually you can put the toy 50metres away and send her. And she ll be used to the rabbit squeal from the toy. I know it’s hassle but it ll pay off

Some good answers already. Be prepared she may be very careful running flat out with other dogs for some time to come. At that age I take the view ferreting is fine but be very careful lamping, If the dog likes ragging a rabbit skin and you can get someone to lamp for you I start by jogging along towing a skin and slip them at it. Looks a bit odd but its good play for the dog and you are engineering the play so theres no risk of failure and minimal risk of injury.  best wishes

UPDATE: Had the pup checked over with a running dog vet that specialises in greyhounds and she is absolutely fine no soreness anywhere. she's had experience running in the dark with my springer in a park close to me and occasionally knocks into him but the vet reckons it was her first time with the wind knocked out of her and got a fright. All good ideas above and I will give them all a go before I take her out again. As above no rush with it all. Again thanks for the replies. ATB

      **sorry for the double post**
I know I'm probably going to get the piss severely ripped out of me for asking this, but
Has anyone ever successfully trained a deaf lurcher (from two working parents and I own her 4 year old sister who is an awesome little bunny basher.)
Genetically she has potential, but...what do you experts think?
She's not a Double merle by the way, it's extreme piebald/white head. Her vision is perfect

Hi to all, so I've never owned a whippet before and have encountered an irritating habit that got worse in the last month of ferreting and was wondering if anyone out there has had success minimising noise during ferreting?
So he runs prey silently, almost never barks at home so I was very happy going into his first winter, but.... when the ferret slot machine is not paying out fast enough for his liking he yips at the holes he senses are near the underground action. On top of that, if he runs a bolted rabbit to ground again he persistently barks at the hole while constantly looking at me as if to say "get them ferrets over here mate, I've got one for you"
I've a very experienced collie lurcher who is a dream to ferret with but the whippet seems to make no reference to the good stuff he does. Any ideas on managing this?

      Evening all,
I'm lucky enough to have first pick from a friends litter. He’s crossed his Saluki dog with his Collie Bull GH bitch. I’ve only seen videos of the litter as he’s based in UK. Few different characters in the litter, some sit reluctant off in the back ground others play among themselves two are incredibly forward one more than the other.

What key things do you look for when picking a litter? I’ve mostly ran mine on rabbits, reds and some others.

      Go stead,
      oshea
