Is their still any of the Gwibnerant strain about found them to be solid strong type of springers mine had this blood in them and they would graft all day.

There is gwibernant in most lines I would think, but it’s a long time since KE passed away . It’s probably best to go to a type one likes rather than look for a certain “line”. I knew a guy that bought in a bitch, took it to a famous stud, then all of a sudden he was talking about his “line”. Also some people will not entertain a certain “line” yet buy dogs saturated with this breeding just because the sire and dam don’t carry the name ! . I personally would be buying off stuff that did the job, like I want it done, rather than how it looks.

I have never seen a gun dog, or any dog for that matter “work all day”......it just don’t happen for all the reasons outlined above.

Moving between drives, picking up and waiting for the whistle, just getting to start lines.....no dog works all day on formal driven shoots.

I can’t speak for grouse mores because I have never been on one.

Even rough shooting the owner will tire before the dog and there will be periods of inactivity

Dogs on the grouse moors do a lot of walking Wilf. You can walk a hour to the start of the drive. Whether walking is working I don’t know ? NO dog works all day.

I moved back to Ireland a few years ago and I can tell you now that these dogs wouldn’t be tolerated over here. Rough shooting is the main type of shooting between friends. It very tough on a dog as the land is as natural as it comes.

I guess it’s what you mean by work all day lads .I’ve shot all day rough shooting with an hours break and same dogs out in the afternoon .Had a lurcher x terrier that I’d take ferreting ,ratting all day and lamping at night with several lads to back that up .

The owner has more say in how much the dog does .Lazy chaps breed lazy dogs and vice versa .

I find it hard to believe more lads aren’t in agreement tbh ..

Ive not seen the spaniel boys feeding sugar supplements for years but was rife when I was younger .

Seen similar mate .Same dogs prone to injury later in day as last reserves are used up .

There used to be a glucose bar especially for dogs but havnt seen one used for years .

I must have heard every story, regarding gundogs and terriers , there is over the years. I like the one, well several different versions, about old jack and his spaniel. Old jack was anywhere between 70 and 209, no one knew. He always kept a line of huge,strong, liver un registered springers. One day on the shoot it was -25 degrees and snow forecast. All the dogs were crawling on their belly’s on the last drive but “shepp” was still fresh as a daisy. None of the ftch spaniels, there were 12 out that day, would face the last 60 acres of bramble so in went shepp and after 30 minutes he had flushed over 300 birds that made the drive !!!!! Word came over the radio that the pickers up, 20 ftch’s plus 6 championship winners, had a white pheasant down over the river and no one could get their Labradors over it. Old jack went over and sent shepp on his way. As darkness grew , and the snow settled, everyone moved to the pub in the village fearing the worst for shepp because, by now, the river was higher than it had ever been. The mood was somber whilst they ate their stew and drank their beer until one of the guns heard scratching at the pub door !!!! As he opened the door in bounded shepp , covered in ice and snow,with a white pheasant in his mouth !!!! Lord montague was so impressed he named his son after the dog. Old jack just smiled

Saw a callus c**t send a springer out on ice on Bowood years ago for a pheasant .Ice cracked and dog was gone .Nobody seemed to give a shit .

Mate, don’t take this the wrong way, what is it that dogs are doing in Ireland that dogs grafted week in, week out on proper shoots are not doing in the UK ?

Dogs here won’t see anything like the amount of graft they do in the UK, I’m sorry but I just don’t buy that at all.

As I said, no offence like it’s just an interesting thing to say.
