Tories showing their true colours.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. I do believe in the so called 'nanny' state. The more individual citizens are looked after by the state the more I like it.I prefer to call it responsible government. The Daily Mail and co can spew their venom about 'handouts' and 'elf and safety' but the truth is that it's the duty of the state to nurture and protect its citizens. I can remember my mam in the fifties taking me to the doctors for jabs and being absolutely over the moon that I wouldn't get polio etc. In those days we were given cod liver oil, orange juice and free school milk. The result was we were a lot healthier than previous generations. I am six inches taller than my brothers who were born before the introduction of the  so called nanny state. That's not a coincidence. (And yes we did all have the same father)?

Since Thatcher the tories have been viciously dismantling state support for people. We've become used to stepping over the homeless, zero hour contracts, food banks and ridiculously high rents because of the deliberate selling off public housing and public assets. Believe me ordinary people were better off in the fifties and sixties than they are now. The tories have created a jungle out there with inequality increasing year on year.

Feeding our poorest kids isn't 'nanny state mate', it's basic government.

I see it like this, we live in a socialist country and in fact continent, so as far as libertarian principals of self dependence go’s......all bets are off.

As can be clearly seen in this thread forced charity (which what the welfare state is) is no charity at all.....

We are going to get rinsed for every penny by fair means or foul anyway, an extremely small proportion of that can go to feed hungry kids and families in need....we won’t even notice.

We have welfare, it’s here and as far as dependence go’s well just create the conditions so that people don’t have be dependant, it isn’t hard.

The example I mentioned about Hungary is a perfect example of what I mean, on the birth of your 4th child you get taken out of the tax system altogether.....the entire fruit of your labour is yours so the harder you work, the better life your kids have.....nobody picking your pocket to waste on nonsense.

Lads, you are going to be handing over trillions anyway, don’t deny a kid a meal just because you are getting hurt by the government.....they are going to f***ing hurt you anyway ?

Don't want to get into any rows about it ,but I agree with the Tories on this .

It’s very easy to get all het up at the thought of snotty nosed kids with Tin ribs opening coal at Xmas .    how many of the mams and dads were fuming at not being out at bank holiday ?  h

Right lads, I have been reading various posts on my old town page about this today and plenty of comments like above. I’ll say here what I said to someone today.....every single person in the UK

One thing has absolutely f**k all to do with the other and it’s not the rule it’s the exception.

Just watch the next 18 months, then you will see ordinary working families deep in shit.....never snorted a line in their life !

I refuse to believe with all the benefits and universal credit (which has gone up because of Covid) that parents can’t feed there own kids for a week! The free school meals are still available during term time but this vote was purely about the half term holiday. It’s all about priorities and managing your money, where does it end? We need more Personal responsibility which just seems to be dying, we need less Government interference in our lives and less reliance on the state not more. It’s to easy for folks to just moan and claim benefits of all kinds (which is what free school meals are a benefit) than to pull themselves up and stop looking to the state.

The worlds reckless economic response to the least deadly “pandemic “ in the history of mankind will send more kids to bed hungry than at any time since WW2...the shit has yet to hit the fan.

Ahh, but this is the thing mate.....compare the price of a house then in today’s terms with the price of a house now.....that will shock you ;)

My old mum is 89, went through the war and she survived pre welfare state.....but people were allowed to survive, that’s the big difference.

The help was non existent but then again the demands were pretty non existent as well.

As I said before, people didn’t change, it’s the “bill” from the government and their pals that changed ?

its all relative pal the wages were nothing like they are today .some folk just think and believe they should be given free handouts and play merry fk when they don't get it ,maybe they learnt that from there parents who were lazy fkrs aswell .

I just think it’s a bit sad that after everything we have witnessed this year and in time when we can make a positive change towards each other, we don’t, we are as mean and nasty and intent on keeping “on message” with the rhetoric that’s fed to us as we always were.

We ain’t taking money out of each other’s pocket imho, it’s just a couple of quid they won’t have to put towards yet another conference in Davos or squander in some yaks wool rainbow diversity flag for “Pride” day

Just my opinion boys

I always thought that having kids was optional not compulsory but I learn something new every day...

Of course but people's circumstances can change out of the blue, not everyone can have their lives planned out.

No wonder the younger generation got no respect when the so called older wiser generation are happy to see them go hungry through no fault of their own.  Shameful.

We've all seen pictures of starving kids from various shit pits around the world but show me one of starving kids in Derby.

I'm shit with computers but my mate sent me a video of a woman saying she can't afford school meals with a cockney talking over it  and she was black and weighed about 20 stone. Somebody must have seen it and if so could you post it.
