Hoping to be moving soon and have already got myself a little doer upper boat that I will be renovating through the winter ready to sell in spring /summer, as long as all goes well should make decent

Maybe it’s me being an old fogey but the the last 20 odd years everything got too “professional”.......it was all bits of paper and method statements and young clever c**ts with no idea of a mans word

I've never really known what 'the dream' is, still don't. But if I was to start over, and with hindsight, I think ten years in the forces and then train as a PH in Africa would probably suit me.

There's a porn star who lives near me

Bambi black

I used to go to school and was friendly with a nice girl who got into that industry.
She was absolutely sound and good fun to be around, all the blokes used to be round her like a disease when we was in the pub having a drink.....it was embarrassing how they carried on.

I always felt a bit sorry for her as it seemed like her mum pushed her to persue it as a career but she seemed comfortable with it.

She was a good 1500m runner when we was at school and we were both on the athletics team, she could have done anything but she did that.

My sons a design engineer for the aircraft industry he does a lot of testing as well, he was responsible for the microwave the beverage dispenser you don’t call it a coffee maker apparently and involved in the cockpit seats on the Dreamliner but he trained for ten years I’m glad he stuck it out.

As for myself I love the Railway been on a long while now admittedly the shifts are anti social but you learn to work your social life around it @Greb147 are you working for a contractor or NWR look into getting a Mobile Operations Managers Job (Mom) best job on the Railway and I’ve had a few road railers ect but I started on the shovel on the P-way so you can progress.

But if I left this tomorrow and I’m not joking I would train to be a Chimney Sweep the amount of work those guys get is unreal, around my area my 3 weeks waiting time to get booked in and there doing at least 6 plus sweeps a day a straight forward sweep with no extras and what I mean by that no new rope or fire bricks replacing they charge between £60/70 do the maths it’s a good living.

Yes mate I'm working for a principal contractor, got a decent amount of tickets but it's a means to an end for me tbh.

I hate the social aspect to it truth be told, how long have you been working on the railway? I started in 2002, had a year or so hiatus but it's all I really know.

I started in the year 2000 and to be honest I’ve worked in most disciplines and then decided to utilise all those tickets and experience in being a Mom as you know we deal with all types of incidents across all disciplines this will do me now till I retire.

Admittedly the social aspect is a pain I work 3 weekends out of four plus weekly 12 hour shifts but the railways been good to me, I was a motorcycle courier for best part of 15 years in London before I started on the railway I don’t know how I survived lol I wish I had thought about the railway sooner.

Food is always a good business as obviously everyone has to eat.

A lad I know was telling me his mate had a few doughnut vans that frequent Sunday markets and any other event he could get to and it's all cash payments.a biker meet up I used to go to which happened on a Thursday night had over 1000 bikes turn up it was like a food festival huge catering vans there etc.big money in food.

Just found a video of the place on YouTube.thats early evening looking at the numbers there.them vans would take £1000s on the night no doubt..

So what exactly does that entail, are you just incident response or are you involved in projects taking place?

So you're doing 12 hours shifts, surely you're not working 5-6 days though? Do you work shifts as well?

Mainly incident response rail incidents staff incidents member of public incidents of which there are many.

I don’t get involved in projects but we will be busy in the coming months with the leaf fall season and in summer it’s trespass and vandalism checks but incidents always take precedence.

Shift wise I start my month tomorrow night 4 nights then 3 days next week Thursday Friday Saturday then 3 more nights Monday Tuesday Wednesday and then the 3rd week Sunday to Wednesday days again all 12 hours then a week off but we do rest days on top of that if you want them you can’t work more than 6 shifts or you break hidden 72 hours, it’s a busy life and some people get obsessed with it we also have an option to do shifts on the EIU as well Emergency intervention unit where you work with a Btp Officer but I work with them most shifts any way because a lot of incidents are public related.

Are you a Project Operations Manager ( Pom ) they do get about a bit and take on some big projects I’ve had problems in the past where there’s all different contractors example being machine controller and machine operator who have never met each other and that’s when it go’s belly up and I get sent out to investigate D&A Test ect.

I think that would be an interesting job tbh but don't like the sound of the shift patterns, that's life though.

Not really down that route, got most safety critical tickets and handback which pays really well when going alone but ideally I want less hours with less weekends and nights.

Level Crossing Manager would be ideal I done it for 7 years Monday to Friday and you manage your own work no nights no on call no weekends.

That don’t sound too shabby mate, nice few days off in between etc.

My pal used to work for Group 4 as a security guard when he got out the army years ago down at Tate & Lyles (or a Charringtons? Can’t remember which now) at Silvertown.

Very similar shift pattern and it gave him plenty of free time......then he got caught fishing the canteen takings out of the cash dump bin with a coat hanger and that was that ! Lol ?

What does that involve mate?, I thought they was all automated now ?

I remember the old signal controllers box and wooden gates in my old town and the bloke sat up there for years, nice steady number like.
