I leant me lesson hard way.  These days I’d rather 3 says a 30 than 1 of 90. An as we ferret the land we work on it’s no big issue if we leave a few for next time, got to point tho we was selling that many that when we wa a half way through season you’d have a bit money in bunny pot but hardly any bunnies left, so we decided few seasons ago to start stopping on 30x unless asked to do more, still takes a few hours to do them an Keeps dogs an ferrets happier getting 3 days out than 1. If I got young dog like now tho then all sense goes out window an I’ll do what ever it takes to get her going, if that means running everything I see them that does it ?

How do you sleep at night ?

I'm with you mate...

We used to do a solar farm, it was rammed with rabbits, ferret in..bucket loads out ..it ain't rocket science! Lol

I love a walk with the dogs and a ferret or 2, may only have 3 or 4 rabbits, but the dogs and ferrets working together is far more reward than 60 rabbits hitting a long net...I've no idea if shooting them with NV is fun, I wouldn't do it as it ain't my job to clear the land completely..

Cracking walk with the dogs at last light on Monday, the little lurcher lifted a hare  I hadn't seen and we had a minute or so of running until it made good its escape into head high maize..

Glad to see it escape and a bit more fitness in the big dog... killing is only a small part of hunting for me..

Don't get me wrong, I want to be in the thick of it slaying stuff like some Greek mythological demigod!  But I'm not pursuing numbers, I'm pursuing sport. The days that are burnt into my memory as special are rarely the biggest and there's a reason for that.

I guess some people live for numbers but I'll never really understand it, I try to do as much different stuff as possible and keep things fresh. Numbers are usually a product of me having to rather than wanting to.

That's sort of my point though mate, I'm not saying that we should limit our numbers, just not judge our sport by them. Your aim is to get as much enjoyment out of your rabbits as you can, if you get to 30 and aren't ready to end the night then get stuck in but if you get to 30 and think "f**k that was fun, I'll call it and do it again tomorrow! can't wait!" then great again. I couldn't give a f**k if anyone thinks I'm any good at anything, my aim is to be the happiest fella not the one with the most medals.

Pretty sure dales rabbits are only worth like half the sport of a midlands rabbit mind.... :whistling:

Dogging in on Tuesday before work. I didn’t kill a thing obviously but by f**k do I still enjoy it... its just another part of this lifestyle that adds to the greater fulfilment we strive for. The trophy shot is such a disservice to what it is about.

Mate, people like you posting on here is what kicked me on to get into it properly and now I love it.

It's a shame that this site isn't what it used to be 4/5yrs ago. Used to be some really good content to read, especially for those learning which I was and still am. Now a lot of the good ones have gone and those that are left don't want to post and instead hang on the periphery with odd comment.

You can get some good advice as I did pre pup, from a few on here (DC, Katchum etc) but everyone is cagey and rightly so because there is more negative to positive nowadays.

I met one of my best friends through this site. Dont doubt there is some great fellas on here with similar interests but as in real life everyone is so guarded now so I can't see that happening again.

Its sad, just sad.

It’s not just dogs and rabbits mate it’s life in 2020 there are adverts running on the radio encouraging people to grass up there neighbours if they have more than 6 people in, we are being turned into a self policing grass thy neighbour society, people would rather film there neighbours in difficulty than go out and help, i,m just an innocent old man that wanders around the countryside putting up cameras, 95% of people I meet welcome me on there land, even though I have a lurcher and terrier in tow and a catty and BBS in my pocket, I now park on peoples driveways and farmyards instead of in pub car parks and motorway service stations like I did when I was at it, it’s just about reinventing yourself and keeping your head down??

241 the latest I've just seen pop up. I don't care what anyone says on here or anywhere else. No one has use for 241 rabbits in one lump.

They were introduced as a food source. That is enough food for a year!

Back in the 80s I would have sold that lot by lunch, do zoo,s and wildlife parks not still buy them ? can remember my escort mk2 ex AA van driving home many a night full up to the roof with anything from deer to trout never took long to sell any of it, trout used to bump out at a £1 each round the pubs and on a few occasions have had to give plod a bit of game when pulled over, more likely to have farmers or keepers smashing up your motor than get nicked back then, I also used to go on the train with my dogs and my catch,s  this is me walking out with my pack probably 40ish years ago a £25 fox pelt and the journey home on the train, used to do it 8/12 hours a day back then while my mates were grafting on building sites for £25 a week great times

You can only shoot them if they are there , if you shoot 100 it means theres plenty. If you only shoot 1 then why are you shooting them ?

Few people mentioned shooting now. These lads were apparantley ferreting and lamping.

If you can go out and hit triple figure then they probably need it.

It doesn't mater what the rabbit meant to the country a thousand years ago, today it's an agricultural pest. Nationally the population has crashed, not because of rifles or nightvision but because of disease. Locally though they are still occurring in numbers to need controlling, evidently. Because of that national crash they seem to be fetching half decent money so of course there is outlets for them.

I think 'trophy shots' alone do fieldsports a disservice but I hardly think significant numbers of lads are doing what they enjoy anyway for likes. They may post for likes but they are doing it anyway. For years the lamps have come out as soon as the silage is cut and the barley comes in.

Yeah it's frustrating struggling to find your own sport when others are smashing it but that ain't their fault. Farmers want em gone. I personally don't get why lads just go out lamping/night shooting, I'd rather let some other mug do it and be in bed for the most part. A decent dog on the lamp though a spectacle to witness and it does seem fundamentally wrong not getting the sport when lads with rifles are getting heaps. But it ain't, because farmers don't give a f**k about killing rabbits honourably.

That's just life in the countryside. I've been there and I decided to roll with the punches rather than get wound up by it.

I agree that if people are getting triple figures then there is a huge rabbit problem.

These were apparantley ferrets and lamped, not shot.

If I had a permission where I got 240 rabbits I wouldn't need to tell anyone, my closest hunting mates would be there anyway.

I also know if I had a perm where I got 240 I would be at it hard untill I was getting 10s/20s so the land owner saw a dramatic decrease yet still keeping some sport on.

Mate, I love that and wish I was there!

You walk into a pub now and try and sell a proper pint to the gin sipping skinny jeans brigade, never mind a dead fish or a cute bunny.

I have no doubt there is places that you could sell, but not as easy as walking into any pub and getting rid nowadays. I live in sticks-ish and am always amazed at the amount of 'shooters' that go on a day pheasant shooting, shoot 100 birds, take a pair.....Then give them away because they don't know how to gut em or do owt with em ??.

When local butcher was open I had a few rabbits off him because the 2/3 he had in window didn't sell.

Times change, not always for the better.?

We used to have rabbit pie on the menu all the time through the season, sold literally thousands of portions from £6.99 - £9.99 over the years. It always sold very well. ?

Cheers, D.
