Help

I’m looking for a pup to meet my needs.  I will be hunting rabbit, fox, and deer.  I will be hunting pastures and easements.  I need something with EXTREME speed for hunting cow-fields and horse-fields in Pennsylvania.  If the deer make it to the woods, they are gone. We don’t have miles of giant fields like the Staghound guys do out west for running coyote.

Does anyone produce Whippet x Staghound crosses?
Can anyone show any video of Dave Platts “English Deerhounds” actually working?
Would a purebred Greyhound be too fragile for field work?

There's a guy on you tube, can't mind his name now. Has bred a couple of litters exactly how you say, dam generation bred platts 28tts deer/grey, sire 22tts pure wippet. Looked cracking. There was footage of one of the pups 16 months old, at a track somewhere over 400 metres I think, looked plenty fast enough.

Hope that's of some help? ?

The US Staghounds for Coyote that I’ve seen were huge and gave up a lot of speed compared to greyhounds.  I’m sure they are rougher for yotes and have more stamina than a greyhound.  For where I’m at, and the terrain I’m hunting, speed is more important than endurance and you don’t need a very rough dog for rabbit,  fox or deer.

You need a game robust dog if doing foxes in numbers. Even the deer can a dog about abit.

My 3/4 whippet 1/4 Aussie staghound,if your after rabbits and occasional fox this is a good cross, fast as fck.For deer I'd put a dog like that back to a stag or have two different dogs. This one is a specialist rabbit/ferreting dog for the hills here in Oz.If you are hunting hard, rough ground don't get a pure grey,I had one and it's feet were constantly shredded, unlike the whippet lurchers.

IMO you need at least a touch of bull to be tackling fox regularly. From chatting with my buddies in PA there are a lot of coyotes and what they call coydogs there now.

I wouldn't go spending money on importing dogs. A full dh won't have the speed your after. I reckon one of those stag hounds over a full greyhound be your best option. And don't enter the dog doubled up.

Be interested to see how you are set up n a couple years time :)

Ijf,

I have a APBTxGrey right now.  Both parents were accomplished in their own right.  I bred him when I was running deer and hogs.  He was a failed experiment.  He wasn’t really game enough for a big boar (he’s caught plenty of sow and shoats), and although I’ve had success with him on deer, I’d catch much more if he were faster.

There are no coyote in my part of the state.  They’ll be here eventually but not yet.  Fox are fast but don’t take much of a dog to kill.  I’ve owned hunting dogs for a long time, just haven’t ventured into longdogs much.

I haven’t seen a Staghound yet that didn’t disappoint me with their speed compared to a greyhound.  The Stags I’ve seen aren’t much faster than my bull-grey, and he’s not fast enough.

Have you tried keeping the dog on the lean side ?

It don’t take much of a dog to kill a fox but it does to do it consistently Iv been searching for for a couple of years for a consistent fox killer  With no joy the one I did have died prematurely. I was gutted he would tackle a lion

I see where you are coming from with the bull grey some do lack the gears for faster quarry

      **sorry for the double post**
I know I'm probably going to get the piss severely ripped out of me for asking this, but
Has anyone ever successfully trained a deaf lurcher (from two working parents and I own her 4 year old sister who is an awesome little bunny basher.)
Genetically she has potential, but...what do you experts think?
She's not a Double merle by the way, it's extreme piebald/white head. Her vision is perfect

Hi to all, so I've never owned a whippet before and have encountered an irritating habit that got worse in the last month of ferreting and was wondering if anyone out there has had success minimising noise during ferreting?
So he runs prey silently, almost never barks at home so I was very happy going into his first winter, but.... when the ferret slot machine is not paying out fast enough for his liking he yips at the holes he senses are near the underground action. On top of that, if he runs a bolted rabbit to ground again he persistently barks at the hole while constantly looking at me as if to say "get them ferrets over here mate, I've got one for you"
I've a very experienced collie lurcher who is a dream to ferret with but the whippet seems to make no reference to the good stuff he does. Any ideas on managing this?

Just got this stunning little bitch, nearly 12 months old, Deerhound x Bedie grey.
I used to go out with my dad's Lurchers when I was a kid but I'm a female in my 30's now and struggling to get back into the swing of things.
I'd love to have this girl knocking down bunnies but I just don't know where to start, I've barely seen a rabbit or and other quarry since I moved here.
Any of you experts in my area fancy giving me some advice/practical experience (hunting related only)
