Back up at the shoot

Recommended Posts

Back at the feeding this morning and the fog was so thick a few of the birds were still on roost at 8:30, they have grouped back up around the pens and are in good numbers over the piggeries so with another 12 days before our next go at them we should still have a few good drives

I was hoping to get up there tonight for a call, but the fog has been there for 2 days now and shows no sign of clearing, it’s Sod’s law I’ve got this time off and the weather is sh*t

It’s been frosty the last couple of mornings, it’s very welcome , hopefully it will kill a few bugs . Unfortunately the Maize and cover crops don’t like it and they will soon be unviable as a drive .

There’s few deer using it, I’ve started putting a few carrots along the edge of the field, we need a bit of snow to cover things so the all head for the feeders. I didn’t see any this morning but there’s plenty of fresh slots about

We’ll keep an eye on it and as soon as we can get out we will, I’m going to have to get out for a walk around the sheep farm in the morning, raining or not, it’s not good for me being inside this much

After early release from my seasonal house arrest due to good behaviour and a break in the weather I decided to celebrate with a trip to the shoot, on arrival, approximately  half 8, the night looked perfect, No moon, very dark with a slight breeze, I headed to my favourite stand at the bottom of the field where I can see right along the oak wood and a fair bit of the tip drive to my left. As I set the caller 60 paces in front of me I heard a fox bark, I had no idea where it came from because me hearing is terrible but thought sexy vixen was worth a go. After half an hour or so with vixen in heat and a few fox calls I’d seen nothing, so tried, pheasants distress, hare calls, rabbit, field mouse and a couple of others, still nothing, I couldn’t be bothered to walk over the piggeries so though I’d give it 10 minutes with vixen in heat and call it a night, 30 seconds in and the unmistakable sight of a fox through the thermal charging from the tip drive, by the time I’d got it in the scope and gave it a whistle to stop it it was no more than 75 yards away, a straight forward shot through the bib and that was the end of that, when I collected my prize I was surprised at the weight of the thing, not a long fox but a short, thick set dog, no doubt full of unpicked pheasants from shoot days, I really must start taking scales with me?
