eastcoast 2,658
I have family who are "working class heroes" that I struggle with. They "never forget" the miners strike. By the 1980's they were a generation removed from their origins and living comfortable middle class lives. The type of people who Margaret Thatcher eventually got to turn coat by playing the green card, coal mining is bad for the environment. Something that we are still paying the price for. I am not for one moment saying that it was not a just fight or that closing the pits did not cause irreparable damage to areas that depended on them. But to some people it has taken on an almost mythical significance. On more than 1 occasion I have asked why don't they bugger off to a country that still mines coal and they and their sons and daughters can spend their days underground the same way our forefathers did? And also remind them that our grandfather was often known to say that he was thankful that none of his grandchildren had to go down the pit. The trouble was it was a way of life to some to me it was just another job.
WILF 37,607
The mining areas are a prime example of why I don’t believe in none of it anymore. Those people were and allowed themselves to be betrayed all round and many were stupid enough to keep faith in people f***ing them. First off they were manipulated by union leaders hungry for power and a new world order, then they became the cannon fodder in a political war, their reward was being dumped on the scrap heap by their own country, they kept voting for a party that flooded their areas with immigrants who ruined the gaff and raped their children, because of their blind faith to labour they were written off by the Tory’s .......it’s been a perfect cluster f**k. Political parties and their followers.....absolute recipe for disaster Edited April 11, 2020 by WILF

Terrible mate, I have held the opinion for a long time that they wanted the small traditional British community smashed to bits and they did it.....and we helped. Maybe all this turn out will make us (the people not the parties ) realise the value in such places and turn to them again, financially poorer almost certainly but so much richer in every other way........I doubt it but it’s my own little fantasy. The power of staring at a phone all day has occupied people so much. I don't think they care anymore mate. You see them walking around a town or on a bus or cafe. It's like being surrounded by zombies.
