Texas forever 

The film is  one of my faves but the book is absolutely quality 

two big heroes who choose different paths , one forced the other through choice . A huge villain of a team called Dallas carter , basically the worst people you can imagine. 

Its an incredible story really from a chance that sports illustrated I think took by putting a reporter into a small high school . 

A real snap shot into what life will have been like in that era in that place . Can’t recommend it enough

Also John Connelly is another good writer, good gritty detective novels.
