Texas forever 

The film is  one of my faves but the book is absolutely quality 

two big heroes who choose different paths , one forced the other through choice . A huge villain of a team called Dallas carter , basically the worst people you can imagine. 

Its an incredible story really from a chance that sports illustrated I think took by putting a reporter into a small high school . 

A real snap shot into what life will have been like in that era in that place . Can’t recommend it enough

Holding the zero by Gerald Seymour.

Fiction about an Iraqi sniper hunting an English sniper, during the Kurdish war.

Fiction, but a great read imo.

Both written by friends of mine, can’t recommend them enough John done the amazon years before edd Stafford, no satelight   Phone, mobile or any other form of communication he took an old shotgun a folding canoe, machete and his wife And rick is about to do an updated version of his book as things have moved on a fair bit since this one was written but it’s still an interesting read if you believe

if you like the rebus stuff on tv Ian rankin did a few books under the name of jack Harvey.. I thought they were really good/gritty..

I enjoyed that book. 

Also John Connelly is another good writer, good gritty detective novels.
