It's not good getting old

I'm not old but I have noticed in my life that dogmen can age faster than a drug addict.I watched it with my old man.His words of wisdom was "Don't worry son it gets worse"

1. No otter was dispatched as I have no legal means to do so

2.Yes it looks dangerous but I have never had a terrier drowned hunting.

I took the last jag from my dad's line(10 yrsold)to a large island .It generally has coon otter and wild hogs.I walked all the way to the end of this island where she quickly entered.I heard a scream and walked out to the edge of the river.

He had already bolted.He had his head raised barking and growling.He would also chirp like a bird on occasion which is their method of calling reinforcement but none came.I stayed hid in the bushes as they will sometimes return to shore after sizing up the terrier.

If a terrier follows our otter into the water they will simply play peekaboo until terrier tires and goes back to shore.My older terriers know this and will stand in shallow water screeching until otter comes back for more.

After he smelled me he decided to go the island in the distance.In years past I would have gotten the boat.Went to that island and dug and dispatch.As our laws have changed I just watched this old Viking of the swamp growl and leave with his head held high.He stopped one last time to squak at the old bitch.

I quickly realized this could be the last time these two families play this game and it choked me up.It was almost as if these two warriors made their peace.

Disclaimer: For the left wing tree hugging Communist who made this law do not be surprised when you go to your river house for summer and your shit eater disappears or comes back without an ear.These river pirates called otter will terrorize and pillage and I will smile.

Nice write up and also nice pics,I've personally dug 2 otters and  bolted 1 in my time with terriers. Last time was when it bolted from an old stone shore that ran to a river,I heatd the splash and seen it swim away. Terrier didn't show and we got a mark on him working away,thinking now it was a 2nd we dug to the dog with a  good size dog fox bottled up,both otter and fox happy to reside together

Do u carry a firearm with you when out with terriers for self  protection from other animals that might eat dogs or you for that matter and have u had any close call with ie big or something else

Thank you Fatman for contributing.Mr robbusher if you are asking me generally I don't carry a firearm but do on occasion.I usually dig by myself and carry as little gear as possible we have very few bears here and no cougars.Wild hog is about the only dangerous big game.If a jag gets one Bayer up in a corner it can get interesting as you have to get around and grab a back leg and throw him.Sometimes I have wished that I would have brought a firearm.

Mr robbusher I have thought all night about your question and I would to change my answer the scariest thing that I  encounter is hunting this swamp.Im only allowed to coon hunt it in September.I kill more poison cottonmouth snakes here than anywhere.There is roughly 100 alligators scattered across 10000 acres.They are generally shy.And if I shot one the government would shoot me.So in this swamp I use my smallest terrier who is easy to tote and swinging a shovel with my right.Is there anyway to build a terrier backpack it would really help if y'all have any suggestions Thanks

We have bobcat here but they live in caves where I wouldn't send a terrier.I would highly doubt that a digging terrier would ever encounter one in a natural situation.I have chased them with hounds but they get away as they can run like a greyhound and are good climbers.
