It is, mate. The US' War on Poverty is over 50 years old and $23trillion dollars in... You have to wonder where all that money is going. People shitting in the streets in parts of California. It's one of those multi-faceted problems at the very root of society the solution lies in empowering people to move up which would mean removing barriers keeping them down. Not a single one of these polticians is addressing that because it can't be turned into a convenient soundbite that will get votes.

Las Vegas recently made homelessness a crime. You will be arrested and go to jail. Good luck getting a rental house with a criminal record.

We definitely have our issues with poverty and struggles with education. If you ask me the biggest problem the entire world faces is poverty. Find away to alleviate poverty and many of our societal problems will go with it. But then what do I know...

Maybe it’s just me and obviously it’s only ever what I see on the telly but I always think California looks horrible......it looks dirty and depressing to me.

The mid west, the south always looks much more appealing.

Id love to take a look at the states one day but California definitely won’t be on my list at all.

Can't argue with that, mate. Personally I think removing a lot of the imposed barriers would be a decent step forward to. Down here in Vegas you can now get a criminal record for being homeless, or camping in the city which is the current euphemism. Most places won't rent apartments or hire people with criminal records and that's just a sliver of the vicious circle.

and that politicians live in gated communities, in affluent areas, with armed security, and don't even see it. So it doesn't effect them.

Northern Cali is beautiful, mate but generally once you get out of the city you leave behind the dirty and depressing. It's always worth a look even if you don't stick around it.

We were there in october . Vegas strip was unreal just a total spectacle.  I wanted to goto a gambling shop that sold all the old casino chips and cards to get for my games back home. f**k me literally 20 seconds off the strip and the streets were littered with homesless crackheads. Was mad to see folk in designer gear and spending like f**k and 20 seconds away the streets are littered with human filth.

That's one of the reasons the city made homelessness a crime. So they can remove them from areas your average tourist might wander into. If you get on Las Vegas Boulevard and go north, past Binions at the top of the strip, you'll see them everywhere. Literally a block north of the strip. Everything to nothing in under a mile.

The worst was turning off of Fremont street at the golden nugget. Never seen anything like it a street with a homeless person every 5 yards. They must be on serious drugs the way they act they are like zombies

Drugs, mental illness... You name it. Their current strategy seems to be increasing the exclusion zone away from the strip. They're literally 30 feet from a $10 all you can eat restaurant and the solution is to clear them out. It's terrible.

Only seen homeless on the streets of NYC in the US. But I’ve seen a woman, I assumed to be a refugee, on the streets of Paris with a newborn (few months old, not minutes)! Bang in the middle with tourists and Parisians all over, not out the way like. Like it was normal...

I’m no saint or hero, I did nothing about it, but that’ll stick with me for many years.

I did a couple years in San Jose (working not jail). I'd say California is beautiful. But crowded until you get east of I-5. Then it's as nice a country as you would want to see. The coast of course is very nice as well. Their politics on the other hand...
