Sober New Year?

Imo alcohol is one of the worst drugs going, mainly because it's legal and widely accepted. 

Most people don't bat an eye at drinking, but if someone mentioned a joint they are the next Pablo Escobar lol.

I see my brother in law every night drink himself into a coma, every night. And his only in his late 30s. I don't know how my sister accepts this as normal.

Sad life really.

There was a house next door to us that made and sold poitìon,  24/7, that's where you'd see the hard cases, if the were very sick from drink, and couldn't handle it straight, they would mix it with cider to lessen the bite.

I always wonder, what’s gets a person to that point?

There was a bloke behind me at the check out in Supervalue t he other day.

Absolutely stinking of stale piss, I mean you could tell he don’t wash himself or his clobber......small ready made dinner in a box and about 6 bottles of wine and whiskey.

What sort of f***ing life is that?

Sorry for your loss bb. One of my brothers was an alcoholic but thank god got himself sorted.

That's a form of living hell id imagine.

Just ghosting through life. You have to ask yourself, what about their family and loved ones. How are they living with this day in day out. If I'm honest I don't think I  could,  but it's easy to say that when you don't have to.

You wouldn't believe the amount that's here drinking. The council bulit an estate here a few years ago. The local shop keeper said it was the best thing that happened for him. He makes more on selling wine, than any other products including petrol and diesel. 

I know a couple of people, including family members that smoke weed, and as far as I can see it's the far lesser of the two evils. Their not messy, or unkept, have good jobs and a strong family unit.

Speaking as someone who is the exact opposite of an alcoholic, I think people generally focus on the bad side of drink when talking about it. IMO I genuinely think our 'drinking culture' is a central pillar of British society. For that reason it just can't be considered similar to any other recreational drug.

Drink is fine, if a person respects it. Same as any other drug, cigs, weed, coke ect ect. The thing about alcohol is it's readily available anywhere anytime, so it's a lot easier to get caught by it.

Seen a lot of young men, some women here, mostly under 50 years kill themselves just through drink. Not to mention the amount of families it destroyed.

I’d imagine the majority of people dependant on drink are fairly normal, every day people......look at the city of London.

Boozers are packed every lunch time and every evening then a Lot of them are going home and having a couple of glasses of wine.

That’s not social drinking, they need it to cope I reckon

Exactly, but whether or not you diagnose it as an addiction the importance it has in our collective social, and to a lesser degree business, lives should not be over looked. I think it's such common part of our culture that we often fail to see that and focus on all the ones who couldn't live healthily with it.

Also, I think 99% of people, quite naturally, embrace the drinking culture early in life, maybe too much, but ultimately benefit from it by building a strong social base, so when they decide to cut it out or at least cut back the only impact it has on their lives is to get rid of the nonsense and shit from overindulgence. Then they make the judgement that drink is generally bad. Try living ya whole life without drink and see if ya make the same judgement...

I agree with that.....the good old British pub for many years has been for many people the focal point of communities ive only been drinking alcohol a few years but i was always in or around pubs as its a good traditional old society thing we do as Brits.......so you get a few drunks and alcoholics here and there so what....personally i think its a tragedy the amount of pubs closing down its just another attack on British tradition and culture in my opinion.

There's obviously variation from place to place but just think about how many events involve social drinking. How many people you have become friends with that you met or developed you friendship with that involved drinking. How many romantic/sexual relationships were forged around events that involved drinking. How many personal/business opportunities have been through a social drinking event.

It's just endless!

For some little villages etc the local pub is as central to their lives as the local church is to a Mormon.

Alcoholism is a shit though. My old man is an alchie and tbh we're just waiting for him to shuffle off. Tried everything, dr even said we should section him (which we all agreed to) and he somehow managed to wangle out of it. He collapsed not long ago, at 9am because he didn't have enough alcohol in his system. 

I've taken to not drinking during the week and having a few at the weekend. Tbf I'd be happy to knock it on the head but as said, the pub(well, bar) is the local focal point and I'll be fuucked if I'm standing in there chatting, whilst supping J20. I will say it's probably easier to become an alchie here, due to the price. Bottle in my local is £1, was in UK couple of weeks ago and a pint was over a fiver.
