What does a Scottish Deerhound cost?

Really tall dogs like deerhounds and their crosses are usually naturally very fast if they have a real good strike they can straight line a lot of quarry and scoop them up before they know whats going on, its good to watch. The problems start when quarry is twisting, jinking and making the dog over shoot, even if the dog is super fit a few missed strikes and over shoots of 20 to 30 yards soon slows the dog down long enough for the quarry to make good its escape, if the dog is not fit they fade really quick usually after one or two missed strikes again making the quarrys escape much easier.

Sounds a good dog.  I'd heard and I can't remember where I got it from, that Deerhounds would strike up, for the likes of Deer but not so much down for the smaller prey, rabbits.  It's just maths really that a tall dog is longer running when reaching legs forward and rear legs back.  They must be 6" at a stretch running. Mind you they've got the coat for the rain here which is 1 reason for thinking about Deerhounds.  They've got the big paws for rough ground, even walking to a hunting spot anywhere around here a greyhound type

might not find easy.

I heard deerhounds can turn on a sixpence and definitely don't have a turning circle similar to that of a double decker bus.

To much for any man that’s wanting one for working with a high likelihood of it being a duffer an no good for work take your risk on a deerhound greyhound the odds are far better in your favour

fair point joe, with tall dogs , i know this  sounds daft even though Buck  28in 90 lb ,  even if over runs stuff, he get back on track quick , he like bryn like that both have good pace/agilty , as said collies and gsd  are both like that .

he picks rabbits up easy, his best bag  38 in the lamp, your right alsatians  are naturally fast dogs, so stick running dog in the mix, there that more quicker. with my big dog he covers the ground quick, with his long stride, he on his quarry quite quick . in my mind there like big collie x greys , and colliexs are fast and agile lurchers. what i love about my big dog , is the way smashes through cover after quarry, it great to see  for such big dog, had cracking walk in the woods early on ,  both him and old bryn , little woody lol full 1hour .15 mins   on the go , both panting heavy when back to motor  great walk

38 rabbits caught by someone is a thing I'll likely not see.  Aye, that ability to get back on terms with quarry quick is the big bonus of a shepherd type in the mix as you point out.

I'll possibly go that route.  Deerhounds are great dogs but the showring may turn them into a big toy if the coursing, racing side of them isn't selected for.  The showring criteria changed Alsatians as we all know.

He maybe able to get back on track quick but the energy he uses to do it eventually adds up to make the night shorter and the bag not as full at the end of the night.

I can see the sense of this statement in 1 way but, 38 rabbits the man can catch.

If I were after a dog foremost for hunting ability and not just standing up to the rain, sleet, weather and more rain and then the constant terrain challenges first before finally getting to the likely hunting spot there'd be no way I'd use a pure Deerhound for anything other than an actual Stag.  Not even a roe deer maybe.

There's not too much good flattish park land in Scotland.  Definitely less in the west.  On accessible good land that's not too bumpy I cannot think of 1 good reason I'd have Deerhound in the mix of a running dog.

Taking nothing away from Buck he is probably a handy dog, 38 rabbits is no big deal to a capable fit dog. I took 20 rabbits with a half x bull bitch when she was really unfit on a moony night and she was definitely not a good rabbit dog.

Just got this stunning little bitch, nearly 12 months old, Deerhound x Bedie grey.
I used to go out with my dad's Lurchers when I was a kid but I'm a female in my 30's now and struggling to get back into the swing of things.
I'd love to have this girl knocking down bunnies but I just don't know where to start, I've barely seen a rabbit or and other quarry since I moved here.
Any of you experts in my area fancy giving me some advice/practical experience (hunting related only)

Anyone ever worked a deaf lurcher by any chance?..reason behind the question is I’ve bred a retired dog to a Merle bitch an I took my pup from it the biggest of the lot black and white with two ice blue eyes but I’ve noticed he can’t hear anything bangs or anything like that there’s only a odd reaction to some stuff but his eyesight is 100% very good eyes. I’m just curious because it’s all I have from this old dog and I was thinking could I use the pup lamping and out with terriers any info be [BANNED TEXT]. The father was not Merle only mother...

      Cheers
