we all no merits of saluki but are you trying to say Spanish galgo are a better choice than our own hounds ,

i see plenty of vids on line of these Spanish "greyhounds " running hare etc ,and yes they run hard ground but to say and think they are a better choice than our own greyhound is crazy .

get a greyhound pup from good coursing parents or good track dogs ,it will do as much as any lurcher given the chance ,

we don't need to look to other shores for running dogs ,

just my opinon

Just less injury prone as they are bred to course rather than race. The impact forces of a greyhounds foot hitting the ground are just an accident waiting to happen on all but good ground. If you want English then a lurcher.

Ive hunted with greyhounds but been very unsuccessful, found them way to injury prone from broken toes to broken necks, they definitely dont lack in heart or drive if anything they have to much. Choose your ground to hunt very wisely, or get a lurcher

If you’ve ever seen the part of the movie this is England where they go and smash the empty houses up  that was basically my introduction to hunting but we had a million lurchers , terriers and any other dog we could find with us . 

A lot of my pals dads etc had greyhounds for the track close to me and we spent a lot of our lives up there watching it on a Friday 

we would return back from a Sunday morning mooching as kids and when the older lads were all squared from our morning of chaos in the countryside  aNd into the pub , we’d go and “lend “ a few greyhounds from our circle for a spot of coursing before tea and Sunday night before school. 

This ruse continued up until the sad passing of my mates brothers flapping specialist who was known at several unregistered tracks under various names but we knew him as moss. 

Moss was a good gambling dog but could moss kill a hare on the flat lands near the A75 ?

in our minds as moss was easily the fastest dog in our gang he was the daddy ! This was going to be special and we waited with baited breath as he hurtled towards the bobbing hare next to the dual carriageway. 

You can guess what happened and the perpetrator was none other than an wagon owned by the father of a then very famous British motorsport star. 

For years to come , we pinned this on our mate who was getting sent to live with his dad in Manchester. Mosses heartbroken owner insists to this day that he still owes him a dog.

“ him and David f***ing coulthard” 

And thus ended our greyhound coursing club , it was strictly lurchers from then on

Kids and bobbery packs were many an introduction for lads in the 60s and 70s including mine. Lurchers, whippets, terriers, labs all featured in ours along with a ferret and 6 nets, scared a lot of game lol, even caught the odd bit.

I grew up on the rd ,we kids would always have a few jooks towing along and most days we helped fill the pot ,my first dog was a whippet  at age of 11   That one of the Stanleys gave me ,we had some fun ,if I was looking for a pure sighthound it would have to b a whippet .

Wouldn't argue, someone looking for a pet that is also a natural for a bit of a wander on the dark side would be my choice over a greyhound any day. Small, quite and clean in the house but comes into its own in the field.

And dont seem to attract attention as much as a grey or saluki type .

and the 80's too sandymere don't forget!!

Wish i had photos of our bobbery pack from back in the day.

We used to knock about on Chatsworth/ Welbeck estates.. and our full team consisted of 7 mutts. 

From top draw lurchers 27" collie/grey x deer/ grey... labs.. to mongeralised terriers.

Anyway. I've nothing but admiration for pure greys.

What an athlete.. and a picture to look at... pure eye candy to any dog man.

I've seen a fair few carried off the coursing fields in deepest Norfolk though.. mostly on heavy ground/ deep sandy plough.

A canine exercet missile. Obviously.. not everybody's fist choice.

Love em or like em. We'd be f@@ked with out em!!

Well said ,my grandad always had a greyhound about his yard and I remember him traveling over to Ireland for good coursing stock back in late 70s 

my uncul also spent many yrs in Ireland as he married farmers daughter and they kept coursing hounds ,he still travels over there now  each yr for meets ,he always telling me to move over there as it's different world .stupid ban etc ,and I can see Corbin banning all hunting with dogs no matter what the pest .

Your grandad sounds a quality fella mate and we really should listen to these older boy's and their story's.

I wish i had the  balls to move over there mate...
