Doggie fails.

Many moons ago we were culling foxes. We had left  a dead sheep in a field and flashed lights for several days over the corpse to familiarise them with lamps. We had counted eleven different foxes attracted to the smell. Perfect windy night we released the big dog. He ran straight down the beam and tucked into the sheep as though he hadn't been fed for a week.☺

I trained a springer to perfection. Convinced my shooting buddies he was a future field trial champion. First day out he performed like a real un. Until he scented a hare and f****d off into the next county. That took a lot of living down I can tell you.☺

Mate's lab was sent to fetch a mallard. We were shooting under moonlight. Heard the splash when he plunged into the water, then a commotion which filled the night air. He came back with an angy and not very mute swan.☺

Finally, had a lurcher which was a family pet. My kids would play stick fetching for hours with him. Took him to a hot place where it wasn't advisable to have a light on too long. Put the beam on an easy target which would filled the freezer and he ignored it and came back with a f***ing b*****d stick straight to hand. I was so very close to beating him to death with it.☺

My first 2 coursing types were kinda free roaming in the garden , they lived in an outhouse and puttered in and out all day in my grandads back garden. The garden was fenced off  to 7 feet aLl around except the front dividing wall which was 5 breeze blocks high 

to 2 27inch Saluki crosses this was f**k all , and as most of my mates had escorts or transits they would stand feet on top of the wall heads like the wind in the williows weasels staring into the road of the council estate we lived on. 

I’d be at school or work and I’d get a text off my mam saying they d gone or she’d had to go recover them from the back of any tradesman who was foolish enough to pull up. Sky vans, plumbers , council men, would leave a side slider open and be greeted on their return with 2 fawn dickheads stood in the back quivering with excitement . 

One of them developed an addiction to ice cream and at the first chords of  “Yankee Doodle Yankee” hed hurtle over the wall, over the front fence and disappear in hot pursuit , knocking kids out of the way to stand paws on the hatch to get a cone which he’d eat in one bite and get brain freeze on the way home , howling and shaking his head as he trotted home. 

The same dog as well was comedy to watch , I used to enjoy watching the coursing videos with him and he would stand stock still in the living room, shaking in anticipation as he watched the events unfolding in the screen. He’d run round the telly as the angle changed and I was never sure if it was the wind from the audio that caught his attention. 

strange how dogs pick up little idiosyncrasies

Years ago was walking the dogs in the local park before an Arsenal match, the police dog squad used to let there dogs out to stretch their legs etc. As I was walking down the hill four or so coppers were at the bottom with the dogs on leads. Doing the sensible thing I got the old mongrel on the lead  as he was a bit of a headcase, meanwhile my young bullterrier had trotted down and by the time I got down, he had mounted one of the police dogs. As I pulled him off, I apologised to the copper who just ignored me completely, while his mates cracked up!
