Too hot to fish so prepared some bait

Recommended Posts

Still over 30C out here and someone has stolen a lot of the river water or so it seems. So I took the opportunity to add some ingredients to our shopping trolley today and set about preparing a bit of bait for when things improve.

I'm nearly out of cheese paste so made a new batch up...

When you've squished it all together add some groundbait, breadcrumbs or flour to thicken it up to the right consistency then give it a good kneading.....

Viola! All ready for some barbel, carp or chub. It is good on its own or as a wrap around pellets or maize grains. I did another one using blue cheese instead of cat food and I also do a Marmite flavoured version.

There were some sand eels on the fish counter so I bought a kilo of perch and zander bait.........

Dried them, sorted them by size then used the vacuum packer to portion them up ready for freezing. ?

It is dead easy to make - 10 minutes at most for a grapefruit sized ball you take out of the freezer, use some and then put it back when you get home. Everybody knows that chub like cheese paste, but carp and barbel love it too. The pastry is for bulk, the grated cheese adds elasticity and protein and also makes it longer lasting on the hook, then add whatever flavour you want; I've used grated luncheon meat, Marmite, blue cheese, tinned tuna or crab meat and fish based cat food. The whole ball only cost €3.
