Apparently it was on the set of Blade Runner where  he got the idea for a wheelie bin. He used to like hanging out between takes in the area where the special effects lads and automotive scientists worked. And one day a cleaner came in dragging a bin that she had attached wheels to. And the rest as they say is history.
