The best Rabbit dog  by far that I have ever seen  was a Whippet Bitch belonging to a mate of mine , I saw it catch 12 Rabbits on the trot this does not seem many with what some Lurchers can do on the lamp or with  Ferreted Rabbits these were Midlands Rabbits pushed out of Hedges and Woods by a Spaniel Cross the Bitch was around 18/19 TTS   and knew its job but as all Whippets it had a  Mouse's  Skin

you say it doesn't sound many. that's top class in my book

no one breed or strain stands out, just individual dogs, and there are to many ways of using a running dog for rabbits, that's why no one can agree, and why an ultimate rabbit dog does not exist, the

my mate had a little whippet x called Dai,...3/4 whippet 1/4 bull, best little dog I've seen around nets and woodland ,hedgerow etc, tough as old boots and didn't miss much...id get 1 bred same way if I

Daytime rabbits hunted bolted and caught by one dog has to be the hardest form of rabbiting, but like bushing with a couple of dogs I find the most enjoyable......lots of missed rabbits and coming hom

I have always bought in but will breed for my next pup. always had half cross but the next one will be three quarter cross. you see I don't lamp so I require dog's to be good in cover, reliably mark and be quick enough for short run rabbits and the outcross does this.

Sorry to bombard you with questions fred90.......I love little grafting lurchers that hunt hard even when there’s not much about.....would you recommend one  if you were only to have one dog for hunting hedgerows and woodlands ...sort of one for the pot.....and would you go half or 3/4 for this?

cheers

I have always said half cross. just right for 25 yard dashes. seem to lack a gear on longer runs. I am going three quarters to add a bit more pace but will I lose a bit in nose and cover work? only one way to find out. I wouldn't have anything else for general mooching about. then again I have no interest in anything bigger than a rabbit or pheasant.

I’ve seen 3 Beddy whippets work, 2 weren’t really up to much if I’m honest and severely lacked pace and couldn’t keep up with a rabbit never mind catch one. But the last one opened my eyes was a little demon working cover but I can’t say how it was on the lamp although the guy I was with said it was great and if he said that I 100% believe him.

My book too , but I have told this tale before  and I have been told it is nothing  compared to lamping or bolted Rabbits  with that I agree but Rabbits flushed from a Hedgerow in Winter will soon show you the stamp of a dog .

I agree with you and I don't want to start a argument but lamped rabbits are easier. by this I mean how many times have you seen lamped rabbits turn back into the field from hedge or stonewall? in the day they go through the hedge or over the wall. all you top lampers don't shoot me I am not knocking your dogs.

I could say same about a lot whippets Iv saw, there’s shite, average an decent mutts in all breeds an types ?

You’re correct , but not sure the wife will be happy with one of each type in the house and garden that’ll be quite a handful, so just want peoples opinions so I can pay my money and make an educated guess on one type of breed if that’s ok.

You sound like you know most of the ins an out an fors an againsts pal, so it is really down to you an what you wanna look at feed live with an pick shite up after? whippets like lurchers can be miles apart from line to line an litter to litter, jus be honest with yourself an make sure you pick the right pup from the right litter as that’s just important as the breed or cross ?

Thanks for the reply and that is sound advice that I will take on board. I am probably over thinking things as usual.

Though I said it was the best Rabbiting  dog I have seen doing that type of work it is the only  one I have ever seen  that's been any good  many years ago a lad had a big Black Whippet  that he thought was the best in the World  and when it was tested it was about as good as the British Heavyweights

I have a Bedlington Bull Greyhound who is how can I say past his best, in the past I have had Beddie Whippet Grey. Yes I will be wanting a dog for rabbits. Mainly mooching , lamping and bit of Ferreting.

I generally just do mooching with my little two lurchers. Ones a bed whip x colllie whip greyhound 19 inch, others a spaniel x lurcher 22 inch.  Plenty of dogs for you to pick from that’ll do above.
