Another good haul plenty of "Field Mushrooms" about and "Chanterelles" but best of all some "Ceps". "Ceps" are already in the dehydrator.

A Warning though found my first "Yellow Stainer" thought it was a button "Horse Mushroom".

Dryad's Saddle common name Pheasants Wing. Found this big old one would be no good, but then on the opposite side were these young ones. Just took one as they are edible and only classed as fair.

Raining to day so gave the Ferreting a rest and went out foraging for Mushrooms etc. My ferreting mate stopped on the way to mine picked a load of nice Field Mushrooms, after a cup of tea we set off t

Giant polypore; cooked it with garlic, chives from the garden and prawns ?   Kids loved it

How I wish I took notice of my grandad when I was a young chavie ,every morning he would leave the horse drawn camp with his basket and terrier by his feet ,

he always took one or two of us kids with him for company on his walks .

he would no what to pick and what to leave ,what ones gave you a bad belly and those good for eating .

his favourite was what he called blue legs ?

i should have took notice as still to this day I haven't got a clue what's good what's not good to eat .

i was out other day and came across a few large mushrooms that looked edible but left them as I don't want to pick wrong ones.

heres a pic I took

probably "The Common Yellow Brittlegill" it is edible. But please don't go out and eat it until you are sure mate.

Looks good ground for "Hedgehog Mushrooms" there.

There are quite a few of the small puff balls and quite a lot are edible but the only puff balls I take are the Giant Puff Ball mate. If it cuts white it's probably "The Common Puffball" but I'm no expert, so please check it out before eating.

Can't make out wether that is yellow on the bottom of the stalk or not. The one you have to watch out with Field Mushrooms and Horse Mushroom is one called the Yellow Stainer. It smells of Indian ink and if you scratch the rim of the cap and the very base of the stalk the Yellow Stainer will go bright chrome yellow.

I've put this link up many times, but I want every body to stay safe. It's a good site and very easy to use.

It will cover Blewits ( Blue Legs ).

Thanks Arry, I came across a load of those hedgehog ones last year. I'll keep an eye out.

What do you use them for, what dishes do you add them too?

There wouldn't be a great tradition of using mushrooms in Ireland apart from the field mushrooms and they were either fried or boiled in milk.
