Can someone please explain why the British are getting involved in another American made problem?

HMGov officially support the current nuclear deal with Iran and do not back the current US administration's position. Equally though they support European sanctions on Syria. The yanks tipped them off on Grace 1 which they were then basically bound to impound, even though it put them at odds with their position on Iran.

Years of underfunding and downsizing of british naval and maritime assets coupled with a frankly negligent attitude meant that they couldn't properly protect shipping and so we are here.

The yanks played us and the Europeans don't even really give a f**k that we stuck by them. The only thing I take from this is we need more warships and less allies. Lol

Jeremy Corbyn coupled with dianne Abbott getting in power is more worrying than any world wars ?

Cue....

I can't see an Iraq style invasion on the books. I don't think there is the appetite for it. The China situation worries me more than Iran.

To be honest born I pay much more attention to the army than the navy although I do concede that you are indeed correct in the downsizing of the fleet and manning (which goes hand in hand ) has turned out to be a stone in the shoe here .

Although it’s wise after the event , the likelihood would be that we’d have a vessel in the vicinity rather than as an escort . I’d imagine there’s some sort of submarine battleships being played out right now

I’d be amazed if they haven’t bumped into each other yet ??

I'm no foreign policy expert or naval strategist so what the feck do I know anyway. Lol. But I do take a fair interest in the naval services. They're going to be critical as an independent island nation with global interests.

You're right about our warship on duty not escorting every ship, it can't alone and just has to position itself as best as possible for a rapid interdiction if needed. Problem is the Iranians just decoyed it once they knew the crack. They are totally outgunned but they make up for it with assymetric tactics, basically those little fast attack boats. And a billion pound astute might as well be a 50 quid dingy for countering those. The Iranians aren't fielding expensive individual assets like we are.

The type 31 frigate will be ideal for this job, armed with those new martlet missiles they've just tested. But they're pissing about regarding that even. Half a dozen warships with force protection marines ready to rapidly be deployed to ships in distress would have avoided this and sent a clear message. All we got out of the gov was "royal marines will not be sent to the gulf to protect shipping"!

Use em or f***ing lose em!
