Yep, early 70's was when my family started with the greyhounds. And you'd get the odd look off the cops and comments from various individuals.

Mad how times have changed. Can't walk anywhere these days without seeing at least a few running dogs, whatever the type/breed, every time you go for a walk lol ?

round where I'm from it was perfectly ok to walk up the road with hare or rabbit in the seventy's.

Yep, could walk up the road with a rabbit or hare, even an air rifle, no-one thought twice about it. But got some stares etc walking the greyhounds ?

Had greys and lurchers in the 70s, other than the egits stopping to ask "is that dog for sale" I didn't get any problems but may well have been different in other areas of the country. There were plenty of lurchers about and plenty in the rescue and shows.

A old fella near me never kept a lurcher snaring and trapping was his mainstay work. But he also used a dog for marking when ferreting retrieving shot night time phesants and for working bramble patches with stop and poke nets. When i look back it was a opporntunity missed as i only went a few times out ferreting with him in the 80s. i could have learned a fair bit from him but was too intrested in seeing dogs run. He only ever kept springers.

I met a old traveler and he showed me the ways of wires ,and nets ,

he took finches and made good living out of them .

he could take hares with his hand ,only person I see do it ,

he had a dog for coursing ,ferreting .

but when poaching he never took a dog .

he was one of the stanleys ,and sadly gone ,

Well I read this book wile on holiday  and left it in the hotel library each to their own on methods used .

My thoughts, for what they are worth; big difference to being a successful,  proper poacher/countryman, to being someone that doesn't really give a f**k ?

Like I said its each to their own but claiming greyhounds were the best dog's for lamping and using torches and crossbows for the taking of pheasants I found a bit daft tbh.
