The British government made massive mistakes with Ireland, we treated people who are basically our own no better than we treated the fuzzy wuzzys in darkest Africa.

We provided fertile ground for the events leading up to 1916 to 1920.

The Black & Tans we’re basically a militia of street fighters bought into to operate outside the rules.

However, for balance......at about this time the IRA had about 100,000 registered volunteers.

100,000 !!

But those 100,000 didn’t want to take the British Army out in the open and go toe to toe.......instead they left it to a few blokes to operate under hit and run tactics.

Attacking patrols, shooting policemen on their way to work and in their homes and then doing a runner to a local house where they were given shelter.

The Black and Tans went into houses because the IRA were hiding in houses, they took shelter behind ordinary folk rather than face the British Army head on.

People were very happy to help them too but it does rather beg the question that if they didn’t use people as a shield the B&Ts would have had no business being in these houses and committing the crimes they did.

Wilf, come off it..you're living in Ireland do a bit of research  before you spout that shite...the IRA numbered around 15,000 volunteers....with 3,000 rifles..a few shotguns and pistols....plenty of hurls, sticks and stones.....now Paddies are stupid, but we ain't total dummies.....internment...scorched earth...divide and conquer....vastly superior numbers...colonial super power with superior forces and arms...and you want a friendly battle in a field....

The Flying Columns who numbered around 2,000 were on the run full time.....they faced the Black and Tans and the British army many times.....why were the Black and Tans so reviled in Ireland? Because of the brutal acts inflicted on innocent civilians by them....some things didn't change in Ireland eh.....the reason the Treaty was signed was the IRA had fook all ammo left....

head up the road to knockcroghery......they''ll tell you about the Black and Tans.....
