Just too add but the pure Wheaton sire used was an out and out dog killer but the dog pup I kept has no aggression at all but fires into game. I was very edgy when he matured because my woman has 3 bichon frise and a miniature schnauzer but he is a big softy. I wished he would of killed at least 2 of them. I'm surprised he's so quiet  when is father was evil. Then again he hasn't ever been in the position where another dog challenged him because I was careful where I brought him with his fathers history. He is a power house with a strong jaw and if he did kick off a small dog wouldn't last seconds. Having said that i bush him with my springer no bother.

Thanks for replies....so i gather its just pot luck that the pup will grow into the type of dog you was hoping for work wise im starting to understand what the different breeds add to the mix but just like looks,coat theres no telling what working attributes are going to be thrown in a first cross ?.....the variables being so great when crossing breeds im surprised people dont inbreed more in Lurchers is there a reason for this ?.....and what does f1 mean i keep seeing that pop up......interesting though cheers.

F1 is first cross so a 5th gen F1 bull/grey like I mentioned earlier is the 5th generation of bull grey. Ie bull/grey to a bull/grey is a second gen, put that to a lnother bull/grey and you have a third gen. 

 

This helps to breed more true to type and get what your looking for. There's quite a lot of line breeding in lines of proven workers but they're not normally available to us mere mortals, well apart from them minshaws

Surely once a real good dog comes along it would be acceptable to in breed on it without loosing too much being as how they are so loosely bred....no ?

They do and there's plenty of line bred dogs out there. Especially in the coursing world

If you inbreed for a few generations then they tend to throw racey. While on paper they are still technically only 50 % greyhound but they usually throw taller and sometimes faster.

In my experience years ago inbreeding produces extremes.....its when you then linebreed on inbred dogs that the uniformity comes.....but im talking about family breeding/shared heritage etc

With Lurchers i would think that the inbreeding tolerances would be massive....inbreeding on 50/50 dogs of different breeds imight be inbreeding on paper but genetically virtually an outcross in reality......maybe im just not looking in the right places but im not really seeing inbred dogs used in Lurcher breeding.

There definitely is gnash but like the dogs you're on about they're kept close. Look at coursing dogs, minshaws and bullxs

Merlin/eve bred, eves in there a few times and so is merlin. Found it on the classifieds

no such thing as a 5th gen F1. Its F1 F2 F3 same as writing 1st gen 2nd gen 3rd gen

Got to agree with that, an F1 is the first X...grey x bull etc...

After that your breeding type to type so 2nd generation etc...

Depends which way the genes throw, if you cross a bull with grey say.Some of the pups may have 75% grey genes and some may have 75% bull genes in the same litter some may be 50/50.So mongrel lurchers are hard to reproduce anything like similar unless you line or inbreed.I think doing that takes away some the fun of owning and working lurchers.
