Best day ever daddy!

My wife took my daughter to a party on Saturday so I took my boy, Will, to cut some wood at a local farm. Pulling into a sidling I noticed a doe up on a bank browsing the brambles in the sunshine only 200m away. I didn’t have the rifle with me but keep a spare pair of bins in my truck and my lad was in raptures about seeing it and asked if we were going to stalk it. 

He’s only 6 - a year younger than I was when I first went out with my dad and while it may have been a little early the conditions were perfect. Besides, he’s seen plenty of deer in the various stages of lardering and processing so it’s not like his only exposure to deer has been Disney’s Bambi. With his eyes shining with excitement we nipped back home to get the rifle... he also decided he needed a packed lunch, a game and some paper / crayons in case we had to wait up somewhere.

Getting back to the farm she was still there in the bank and I set Will up against a hedge with his packed lunch, toys and binoculars while I stalked in alone across the open field to try and close the gap between me and the doe. 50m later I indicated to Will I was going to shoot and settled down for a prone shot, straight in the chest and down she went in her tracks. Perfect.

On the way home with a load of logs and a deer in the back he said ‘thank you daddy, this is the best day ever’... I’m made up!

brilliant. my lad has been ferreting and recently stood with me on my peg. he is 5 and loves every minute of it. often comes out to watch me joint up deer as well. i think it is a great idea to introduce them to the country sports at a young age

Enjoy it mate when they get to there teens and beyond and tell you your doing it wrong you ask yourself how have i got by all these years then LOL
