Small lurcher,

Hello all, bit of a strange one this BUT, my 8 year old lad wants to get into the game but obviously with him only being 8 if rather him go out with me, however, hes now decided he wants his own dog instead of just going with me. Mythering me for the last few months now and I've decided to post on here, andlooking at purchasing a small dog for him, preferably whippet, or atleastbsomething that isnt going to pull him over a field. BUT won't be spending a lot of money as it's nearly xmas and already spent too much and as this will be part xmas for him it needs to be fairly cheap,(cheeky), going to start him with ferreting first to see how he gets on.

He's slipped mine a few times over the years and really enjoys it, if he gets bored the dog will be in my hands. He lives with me anyway(single parent) so the dog will be with me aswell

I wouldn't be buying him a dog at all like has been said let him get out with you and your dogs see if he keeps it up for a couple of years else you'll be wasting money and be a waste of a dog else just my view on the matter

That's what my lads does. He cleans kennels with me, walks pups with me, goes on the lamp with me and ferreting, has done for 4 years but my dogs are my dogs, but as he says, it's excited when your dogs chasing but he would like it more if he had a dog, because then his dog will be chasing. clever lad he it. Even asked to use his uncles dog last week.

I wouldn't worry about the cost of buying it, you've got to be able to keep it. Sure you've thought this through?

Get yourself a whippet or x and let the lad handle the pup,clean kennel and feed Walk the juckel.

Its ok haven a working animal but got put hard work in,its not all about the chase, lamping ferreting etc,

Once lad is cleaning crap up in all weather and walking training and getting juck fit,he might want to go back to play station with pals but if hes willing on doing everything a dog needs and training and getting fit to work then gift the dog to him.

If he doesn't get into the running dog game then no harm as you are dogs owner.at least this way you aint left looking after a dog u don't want.

If he's really into it constantly wanting to go out why not get him a little rescue lurcher if it's only for chasing rabbits, I can remember walking 2 terriers round a field digging up moles ( never did get one) but had the time of my life everything just seemed so fascinating out in the felds

Hows the Plummer doing ,I used to work at a animal feed place and rats every we're,a lad had two plummers and weekends he'd take good numbers with them, I'm sure they took and probably still do take hundreds over weekend 

I used to stand looking at walls and they was moving that many.

He never tried them on anything else but they looked capable anufe to me .

I got my 1st dog for my 4th birthday (my dad wanted another so was a good excuse for him).my pa obviously trained it but I spent all my time with the dog and learning off mi pa I'd get up at 4am to go out for day on a weekend with him or him and his mate.i remember once him taking me along a river for a walk when I was about 6 about 4mile and 4 mile back  over the fields anyway one morning I used to take my dog up to the top fields for a walk and decided to go to where my dad had took me a few weeks before at the end of the river you had to cross a busy A road to walk back through the fields home only when crossing the road one of my mum's friends saw me stopped the car and put me and the dog in and took me home (the grass) so obviously my ma hit the roof but my dad was secretly proud that at 6 I'd remembered my way the point of the story with out that dog I wouldn't have had dogs all my life apart from last 5 years and never would have got the hunting bug.and Its still things like that you remember

My step son started mooching out with the dogs with me when he was 7 yrs old he got the bite for it got his own dog a few years back I put the time and work into her and for his 1st dog she was doing him proud and me unfortunately she was killed although it wasn't nice it taught him that working dogs come with a price yeah he was gutted but he understood any was I purchased a whippet type pup off some travellers meant to be 3/4 whippet 1/4 Bedlington but I'd say there a dash of collie in it any way the dog was dubbed dash and he's nowt special but my step son loves him he's only about 21tts can be timid but he's pretty steady
