I know on old retired chap who makes stocks for a hobby . He has made some fine sticks with animal and bird heads which he carves himself. I have been asking for  a fox head stick for ages and it was always, “Ive never done one”,  I don’t think I could” . Anyway he turned up yesterday at this shoot where we go Loading with this stick , not bad for a first attempt at a fox . I am over the moon with it . BF7FED9C-92E6-4CFC-BADE-892CD7FA9889.jpeg.b98b4d5eba07f26306564324c35b66cb.jpeg

One of my beaters announced his retirement this year . He has been beating on the shoot for over 50 years and was part of the furniture. Sadly a recurring problem with his leg meant he could no longer get about as he would like . I offered to give him easy jobs , like the game cart or just go on stop , but he said if he couldn’t put in a proper days beating he wouldn’t be coming. We all think a lot of him , his sense of humour and wisdom will be missed by beaters and the guns. I had a word with my mate Norman who makes sticks and asked him for a Duck head stick as the old beater was a keen wild Fowler . And this is what he came up with . We had a whip around with the guns and beaters , at the end of season skittles evening we presented it to him . He didn’t say much and I could see he was a bit overwhelmed. I think it’s a fine stick and the least we could do to show a proper old countryman that we appreciated all the years service. I got the youngest beater to present it . Thanks Dave
