Guard dogs

I had a couple lurchers that was scared of terriers.

As far as duel purpose hogdogs guard dogs  like the catahoulas I believe the old saying jack of all trades master of none.Not that you can't get a good one but we didn't breed them. 

The smartest guard dogs I've ever been around were all mutts from the pound.These same dogs were with their owners all the time.It makes wonder how much of guard dog is the handler.

As my father always said the number one rule for dogs is the owner must be smarter than the dog.

My lads got one of those Mali’s 9 month old bitch she’s good with the kids but she’s a c**t with the terriers grabbed hold of three of them

ITS their environment i reckon,cause my 2 wouldnt guard for shit,their sire is a quiet content dog too,but i met him with his owner at the times i called there ,so alone he might be different,..a sister to yours over here is very friendly also,no guarding instincts at all yet

Same with this dickhead. Wouldn't call him a guard dog but if he barks or reacts, I know something is not right.

For those who have experience with German shepherd's, our dog, that's from working lines, turned out to be a right pain in the hole, he never settled in to a pattern of behaviour, he did some things you'd not expect him to do, and basically he turned me off shepherd's for life... He was at times very good at guarding, and other time switched completely off, and then other times I'd have a mate in the kennel and out of the blue he'd become defensive and focus on my mate even though I was there, one shout and he'd stop but I had to keep an eye on the prick the whole time... He focused on people at times when there was no need, my late mother in law being one, even though he knew her well, it was a one off but a step too far for me,... I have to say I ended up hating the stupid mutt, he became aggressive towards my own dogs and if a bitch came in heat, he was a time bomb..... I will NEVER  have another, as good a deterrent as he is, he used to sleep outside his box at times, freezing cold, snow, didn't matter, lol... Just thought I'd put it out there and see what experienced folks made of it

Well  , I am no expert on the breed, but I do know a bloke, who was a dog handler in the RAF, for 30 years, and help pick gsd pups for the police,  so obviously. He knows the breed gsd, and he worked bel mals as well.  He seen Buck my 1x gsd grey, and said his temp was brill, he liked about him that, he was big daft thing with people/dogs, but flick of a switch he be full on when running quarry. He liked his gsds to be the same attitude,, only guard when they have to. He showed me a bel mal doing bit of tug work with him, the dog was only 70 lb, but  feckin strong dog, he  said Buck be twice as strong as him,  count your self lucky he daft with people, or you have very dangerous dog. It's all down to breeding  he told me,  you got to get the right working lines, and try to pick the right pup for you, all pups will be differnt in a litter like any other dogs, some bold, some., nervy etc,  Buck dam was nice easy going type gsd, she guard. But relax once you told her to, a black 24 in  bitch  nice dog. To be honest mate, if wanted a gusrd/watch dog, I just get  a dog from the pound, x bred collie or x bred gsd,  be more stable temp, and still do good job. Plenty of gsd x types down scrap yards etc, be healthy. And prob better temps, as there not inter bred like alot of the pure gsd lines, that's what I do mate. Get good old type mongrel gsd, x bred or collie type
