That suits you perfect stick with it, everyone is different I'm not saying one breed is better then the other just different type dogs suit different people better.

Worked plenty of bandogs over the years some bang off them on a long send for sure no suit would be mangled in no time, fine looking animals some of them.

And to be honest I don't want a PP dog barking at strangers or been aggressive... That's what a guard dog does a PP dog should be neutral to everyone with a on/off switch no point haven a dog that goes for all strangers u have to keep locked up when anyone comes over anything kicks off the dogs in the pen

 

Guard dog's and PP dogs are completely different although thy look the same there mentality is different if any of this is confusing to you of anyone on the fourm please pull me on it I'll be happy to explain 

I very nearly got a working mali before I got my bull x.  I was going to a place where they trained them a couple of sundays for 2 hours a time. Never seen such obedient high wired dogs.

I was up for running the dog 4/5 mile every morning when it came of age obviously, but the owners/ trainers said that " I would just end up with a really fit dog ". Apparently they need the mental/work stimulation more.  

I went to the football and when I left,  I said to one of the coppers outside "nice dog" about his Mali, I'm getting one of those and his reply shocked " what you're getting one of these as a pet ". I thought maybe not then.

I had a scott type American bulldog a while back he was some guard dog . I then got myself a whippet cracking boy, wouldn't get off the sofa if a stranger came into my house , but I wouldn't have expected him to either.

I've now got a young bull X and hes got massive guarding instincts which has surprised me , I'm impressed.

Mali's are a very wide range of dogs these days everyone will have different experiences with them I'd almost go as far as to saying thy very like a game bred pitbull and a bully XL would yet fall under the brcket "pitbull" in some people's mind.

 

The high drives in Mali's are desired traits in working dogs but not so much in pets you can get some that will switch off while at home, my advise is if looking for a Mali as a pet go to as many training sessions as u can in protection work and talk to as many experienced owners as u can to get feed back.

 

I've had some right pain is the ass Mali's over the years stress levels threw the roof with them to the point it was not enjoyable owning the dogs and countless hours training them.

would you say, there more hyper  than a collie, or jack Russel  , as both these breeds , never really switch off . , once they had there kip  say  6-7 hours sleep  , there  up for anything rest of the day .!

It's a wide bracket there all different some can switch off, but let's just say for the topics sake a full on over the top Russle and full on over the top Mali the difference is one can weight up to 40kg and you just don't want that flying around like a scalded cat knocking off things barking it's head off around the house and yard. With training and exercise it helps keep them clear in the head and balanced but some need to be constantly kept in check, different lines offer different traits and low drive Mali's can make good pets less demanding I honestly believe if getting one that person should have a valid reason otherwise can become you don't even enjoy the dog over stress and anxiety there causing, a pup is always a gamble don't know what your getting if someone was to be admit on getting one I'd suggest one that's bit older and you can see it's traits and level of drives.

Slippery slope when you start breeding working breeds for pet traits surely?

it's been going on for a long time now breeding for colours ect pets4homes and gumtree was flooded with them and blue ones selling for more people breeding just to get blues, I'm gonna be very honest I dont think there worth the price tag as a pup, it's the hours training in them that adds value (been sold 6m/1yr) but going picking out a 8 week old pup paying 1,000+ I think is over priced but that's the market price for a well bred one.

It's about the money not the dogs anymore worse thing that could of happened was that Mali going on the mission to kill osama bin laden with the navy seal team after that every c**t and his mother was on google and YouTube searching them and watching videos thinking it was cool to own one YouTube shows flashy videos won't show you the metal bowels been chewed in pens the countless pairs of bottoms ruined by pups hanging outta you dogs barking there heads off at all hours for nothing many a night been out in the yard in my underwear freezing the balls off myself getting them back into there kennels, some them would hear a mouse fart and there crashing off the pens barking there heads off.

Some great posts H&B. Your dead right about those youtube Mali clips we've all been watching. It's all very impressive stuff, until you start breaking it down and rationalising on what it would be like to own a dog like that, especially for those who would have no idea of what would need to go into a dog wired like that..!

And again your dead right in the difference between PP and guarding.

For me i have no need for either type. Certainly don't require a PP dog and don't need a guard dog either, as i ain't got much to guard and unless i had, i really dont want to feed one, or put my time and effort into such an animal. As a hunter, all my time us/should be dedicated to my hunting dogs. Now what i have found is that as my hunting dogs double-up as family pets and when we are at home, spend their days with us constantly, their doggy loyalty starts to shine and they take on a nice steady basic guarding role on our property.

For us its the best of both worlds, a hunter come pet, that instinctivley knows when somethings not right and alerts us. Job done!

Some of the dogs we've had have been better than others, of course but ALL over the past 25 years+ have shown this side. I may be wrong but a dog that feels part of the 'family' will act accordingly when it senses something ain't right.

The best of them was my last lurcher, bred by Joe Ox, Ike had a fair drop of collie blood and a dash of bull. He was just about as quiet and gentle a family dog as you'd find BUT really did have a second sense with strangers, near or entering our property. A real Jeckle & Hyde dog, I have no doubt that if anyone would have entered our garden he would of 'directly' defended us.

And for me, thats just about all i need.

Official  War  dog of US Marine Corps during World  War ll , Pacific duty in Guam places like that , nerves of steel , 

Splashed all over the papers  and news in the States  at the time , everyone wanted one , you can’t breed friendliness into a breed,  all your doing is breeding a flaw/weakness  Into the Animal  , 

when they stop breeding for purpose and function, you f**k up the genetic pool 

almost unheard now as a true working animal , I’d hate to see that happen to the Mali

The hunter / pet you mention as much as we all like to go on about how much we only care about the dogs working ability I'll admit myself forming bonds with dogs outside the field is enjoyable and if been honest a bonus, once it's working to the standard I expect haven a bond with the dog is a bonus.

 

Saying that I've had some working dogs that didn't even like been petted real serious type that's no problem I'll always keep a dog on ability 1st. Just referring to your post haven the bond is a bonus I agree.

Couldn't be doing with a Mali as a guard dog or  a pp dog.I'll stick with the bandogs.Totally laid back around people all the time im relaxed around them and like all my neighbor's say If we hear your dog bark we get up and have a look because we know shes doing it for a reason.
