Measles

More than 41000 cases of measles have been reported in Europe during the first six months of this year, according to the WHO via an article from Global News.

That's up from 23,927 in 2017 which was a whopping increase from the 5273 cases reported in 2016.

 

23,000 of these cases are said to come from the Ukraine while France, Georgia, Greece, Italy, Russia and Serbia have all reported more than a thousand cases each so far this year.

Removing war-torn Ukraine from the statistics specialists are blaming the increase partly on vaccine scepticism in Europe. Several countries are against vaccination based on some shady figures on autism that internet crackpots have run with over the last few years. It probably won't help that Indonesia's top islamic body have issued a 'fatwa' on the measles vaccine declaring it 'haram' as it contains pork and human cells. Which will probably go global once the warring factions find that it's a common enemy.

Ironically Europe could have a growing problem as measles enjoys a resurgence. Religious fundamentalists not allowing the vaccination meeting European conspiracy advocates not allowing the vaccination as migration moves from the Middle East into Eastern Europe... Sounds like the plot for a Hollywood thriller.

My daughter had measles when she was little - some of the other mums at the school wanted to bring their kids round so that they could catch it young and build a natural resistance to it.

Dirty stinking unvaccinated Europeans too.  The discredited Wakefield study in the UK saw a surge of people opting out of immunizations after the scare that vaccines caused autism. This is a double whammy of people not vaccinating because of some perceived additional risk and the introduction of people that don't vaccinate for religious reasons.

EDIT: Around 24,000 children in Britain aren't immunized against measles, mumps and rubella. Three in ten French people don't believe in vaccination.

Peanut and a few other allergies were non existent in the 1960s. The only thing been done different now is vaccines and sterilising baby bottles. Makes  you wonder if there is a link.

This was common only a few years ago. It might still be so. If a kid got chicken pox , mumps, measles or any other childhood deseases they always had parties. Mumps in childhood is just an inconvenience. Mumps in adulthood  is dangerous. My brother caught mumps in his teens and his equipment swelled up so big that he had to lift it about when he had to go to the toilet. this might sound fun but it wasn't for him.

I just asked her and she said that about the only thing that goes round is chicken pox.  But now there is hand,foot and mouth desease and slap cheek .??

I had mumps at around 19 but the only thing that swelled up was my cheeks.
