I get those lizards in my garden pond ?

Always liked reptiles and amphibians, spent an afternoon looking for snakes and lizards in Bangkok earlier in the year,inner-city monitor lizards.

Are they just lurking around the waters in the city?

Loads of canals in Bangkok, wander down them, you see monitors everywhere,i have seen turtles, python and cobras as well in the past,i put a pic on here 4 or 5 years ago of a monitor in central Bangkok eating a bullfrog, cant find the pic though?

Where we caught them as kids was a bit of wasteland and only an area of a few hundred yards square and could pick up 20/40 in an afternoon. You'd often get them in twos and threes basking on the anthills

When you caught them did you try keep them or did you release them

Reptiles need warmth from the sun to get moving about, so you won't see them at night ?,as for keeping common lizards i did as a young lad have a few but come towards the end of summer i always let them go back where i caught them as i was worried about the hybernation bit.used to feed them on fly's,maggots and other bugs i found around the garden at home and they all lived ok in a fish tank in my bedroom..
