Patterdale pup training advice

Hi people I have a patterdale terrior pup he's 14 weeks old and I'm wanting to train him to hunt rabbits at what age would u normally take your dog out? Do they naturally find their way or are there training methods to help, I'm not going to lie I'm a complete novice when it comes to dog hunting and want to make sure I do everything the correct way, any advice would be much appreciated

Beagle pups we start on rabbits we just get them around rabbits. I don’t know what it’s like where you are but we have some good county parks that are mowed with wooded edges, early mornings the rabbits will be right on the edge there. Take the pup out and let him see them, then smell them. Every day you can just keep on it. They’ll figure it out quicker than you think. Lots of praise and make it fun.

General rule is if you call a patterdale and he comes straight back then get rid of him. He should be thinking about what's in front of him and ignoring who's behind him. He should only come when you have 1 kilo of beef in your hand. Then he would come anyway even if you didn't call him or told him to go away.

There is a lot of countryside where I am so finding them won't be an issue, what you have said is what I've been thinking thanks for the advice

Sounds like he's going to be a good dog then he doesn't listen and he's dug holes all over the garden both his parents are fox dogs so it is in his blood, the thing I'm worried about is him going to ground is it wise to carry a shovel? How long do you leave a dog down a hole before you dig

Hit it over the head with the shovel  then it won't go down any holes.

GET a shovel and locator system to be safe

Read up on the laws buddy when it comes to working dogs in the UK if your new to the sport.     If he's bred off earth dogs be extra careful. Going to ground is kinda what terriers do bud so keep your eye on him best you can........ good luck and I hope you have fun with your little dog.

All ways collared and all ways carry a shovel if it was me. If it is bred right it will likely self enter to all sorts when it is ready
