Putting kits with adult hob

Recommended Posts

I lined my mates jill this season with my hob, and before the kits were born a lurcher got a hold of him and he had to be put down. I got the brother of the jill as a replacement to work with. The kits are ready to come home to me now, and i was wondering whether it would be ok to put them with the hob eventually. Ive got a big set up for them and a smaller hutch to put the hob in for the time being so they can get used to the smell of each other but eventually i want them all together. How old will the kits have to be before i put them in with him? They are currently 9 weeks. Cheers

As soon as his drive to mate goes they should be fine. It will also depend on the character of your hob, the one I had was real chilled out and wasn't phased at all by being put in with a court full of his offspring. I think you've done the right thing taking the hob out and planning to put him in with the other ferrets, rather than doing it the other way around.

As said should be fine as long as hes no in season , a group of hobs will live together fine till they come into season then ones going to get a sore bum

Went and got a wee kit yesterday loved it pick of two it tried to bite me the other one was a bit quieter so opted for the bitter hoping it has a bit of spirit came home with the wife petting her all the way and not a problem  and my son picked her up and she nailed him repeatedly  she went up in my estimations LOL ive got her by herself in a box as i dont trust putting her in with my hob or putting one of the 8 jills in with her till she grows a bit mate but it might be a good excuse to get another kitt to keep her company

So would you have to split them when it comes round to mating again? I've not kept more than 1 hob together before but am planning on keeping 2 hob kits together from a litter I had this year. Will that prove a problem come next March/April?

Some folk keep them in a group and put bitter apple ect on there necks to stop them pumping each other or get them nectured so they live peacefully , but if you can put up with the odd bit of noise it wont be worse than a jill being mated or pulled about go for it , with more than one ferret your going to have a rank system anyway

Just tested the water today after gutting the cages out. Put a couple of the kits with a bit of bitter apple on their necks in with the big hob. He never went to bite them but he was batting and scratching one of them. I bottled it and put the kits in their own cage again. I'll try again in a few weeks when they are bigger.

Hi just wondered if anyone had a hob vasectomised lately and could give a rough idea of costs? Is it a procedure any vet practice will carry out or are you best of going to somewhere that specialises in this sort of thing?
I intend to breed my hob and jill when she comes season, to keep a Jill for myself and I’d have homes for any spare. Then I think I’d like to have him done and let them have run of a court together all year round.

Just to add, if anyone has had one done or knew of a vets they’d recommend for doing it in the north east please let me know.

      Many Thanks CC

Hi guys, so I have two ferret one hob and a Jill they spent some time outside in the hutch which is a two story with ox tongue and juicy meat that they would eat in the wild.

And cold night indoors in their cage with run free Space to explore indoors
looking for a hob to mate with my Jill  early next year.

My kits are related so thinking, despite reading all the information about brother and sister likely being okay to mate ?
Would anyone like to breed with my Jill, who is very healthy and socialised?
. I live Buxton Derbyshire, I am going to get my hob vasectomise, but looking to breed with my Jill when the season arrives
please message if you’re interested, she is from good stock

My little doe has finally had her kits around a week ago their mum is a great little hunter but also a great pet  she is proud of them and i have been close to them but still keeping a distance from them at this stage  hopefully if i can get 3 to 4 bucks for new stock I will be happy with that . My question is I have in the past put my young ones to work with their mum at around 6 months old is that a bit to early. Second of all I will keep one of her daughters for breading as milly is getting old  . With the older ones I will pass them on as pets as that are friendly when handheld but do hunt when they out to work . c
